Background: Since the gut microbiota is important for athlete health and performance, its optimization is increasingly gaining attention in sports nutrition, for example, with whole fermented foods. Sauerkraut is a traditional fermented food rich in pro-, pre-, and postbiotics, which has not yet been investigated in the field of sports nutrition.
Methods: To determine whether sauerkraut could be used for gut microbiota optimization in sports nutrition, a proof-of-concept study was conducted.

Mutations in the SLC25A38 gene are responsible for the second most common form of congenital sideroblastic anemia (CSA), a severe condition for which no effective treatment exists. We developed and characterized a K562 erythroleukemia cell line with markedly reduced expression of the SLC25A38 protein (A38-low cells). This model successfully recapitulated the main features of CSA, including reduced heme content and mitochondrial respiration, increase in mitochondrial iron, ROS levels and sensitivity to oxidative stress.

Daily, more and more people consume snack bars that may have an impact on blood glucose levels. The aim of the present study was to compare the acute effects of a common snack and a plant-based snack bar (PB) that was developed at the University of Thessaly as a functional diabetic snack on blood glucose and insulin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Adults with T2DM ( = 10) treated with oral medications were studied in a randomized, crossover clinical trial.

The first monomeric pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent transaminase from a marine, aromatic-compound-degrading, sulfate-reducing bacterium Tol2, has been studied using structural, kinetic, and spectral methods. The monomeric organization of the transaminase was confirmed by both gel filtration and crystallography. The PLP-dependent transaminase is of the fold type IV and deaminates D-alanine and ()-phenylethylamine in half-reactions.
