Aims: To determine the mechanism of killing of Bacillus subtilis spores by hydrogen peroxide.
Methods And Results: Killing of spores of B. subtilis with hydrogen peroxide caused no release of dipicolinic acid (DPA) and hydrogen peroxide-killed spores were not appreciably sensitized for DPA release upon a subsequent heat treatment. Hydrogen peroxide-killed spores appeared to initiate germination normally, released DPA and hydrolysed significant amounts of their cortex. However, the germinated killed spores did not swell, did not accumulate ATP or reduced flavin mononucleotide and the cores of these germinated spores were not accessible to nucleic acid stains.
Conclusions: These data indicate that treatment with hydrogen peroxide results in spores in which the core cannot swell properly during spore germination.
Significance And Impact Of The Study: The results provide further information on the mechanism of killing of spores of Bacillus species by hydrogen peroxide.

Figure-eight macrocycles represent a fascinating class of π-conjugated units characterized by unique aesthetics and non-contact molecular crossing at the center. Despite progress in synthesis over the past century, research into inorganic, organic, and polymeric figure-eight materials remains in its infancy. Here we report the first examples of figure-eight covalent organic frameworks by condensing figure-eight knots to create extended porous figure-eight π architectures.

This study investigated the mechanisms employed by exogenous dopamine application in alleviating chilling injury in kiwifruits during storage at 1 °C for 120 days. Our results indicated that dopamine treatment at 150 µM alleviated chilling injury in kiwifruits during storage at 1 °C for 120 days. By 150 µM dopamine application, higher SUMO E3 ligase (SIZ1) and target of rapamycin (TOR) genes expression accompanied by lower poly(ADP-Ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) and sucrose non-fermenting 1-related kinase 1 (SnRK1) genes expression was associated with higher salicylic acid, ATP, NADPH and proline accumulation in kiwifruits during storage at 1 °C for 120 days.

This study aimed to provide insights into the hepatorenal toxicity induced by erythrosine, a synthetic red dye commonly used in food and pharmaceuticals, which has raised concerns over its potential health risks. Twenty-four rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 6). The first group was the control group and the other group received one of three doses of erythrosine based on acceptable daily intake (¼ ADI, ½ ADI, and ADI, 0.

Cuproptosis shows great prospects in cancer treatments. However, insufficient intracellular copper amount, low-level redox homeostasis, and hypoxic tumor microenvironment severely restrict cuproptosis efficacy. Herein, hydrazided hyaluronan-templated decorated CuO-doxorubicin (CuDT) nanodot clusters (NCs) are developed for efficient doxorubicin (DOX)-sensitized cuproptosis therapy in breast cancer via a three-pronged strategy.

Synergistic photodynamic/photothermal therapy (PDT/PTT) can be used to target cancer cells by locally generating singlet oxygen species or increasing temperature under laser irradiation. This approach offers higher tumor ablation efficiency, lower therapeutic dose requirements, and reduced side effects compared to single treatment approaches. However, the therapeutic efficiency of PDT/PTT is still limited by the low oxygen levels within the solid tumors caused by abnormal vasculature and altered cancer cell metabolism.
