Measurements of the suspended particle concentration in a lake demonstrate the presence of a turbid hydrothermal plume. The plume, generated from a warm source develops upward carrying a suspension of particles from the bottom. It is found that the vertical structure of the plume depends on the stratification of the water column, which in turn depends on the seasonal meteorological conditions. During the stratified period of the lake, the plume is constricted to the hypolimnion zone. At the beginning of the summer season, the plume reaches the bottom of the metalimnion meanwhile at the end of this season the plume does not. In the mixed period of the lake, the plume develops in the whole water column and reaches the surface of the lake, where particles accumulate and spread around the center. Measurements of the vertical fish distribution in the stratified period show that the plume can constrict the fish habitat due to an increase of suspended particles transported by the plume.

The Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT), developed by the FAA, is used to analyze the environmental impact of airport activities on air quality and noise near airports. AEDT incorporates AERMOD to estimate concentrations resulting from aircraft emissions, which possess horizontal momentum as well as buoyancy. The current version (v23132) of AERMOD incorporates plume dynamics associated with such emissions as an ALPHA option.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) fate and transport across a groundwater-surface water interface.

Sci Total Environ

November 2024

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Central Michigan University, United States of America; Institute for Great Lakes Research, Central Michigan University, United States of America. Electronic address:

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging contaminants of concern whose fate and transport in environmental media are incompletely understood. In the 1960s, PFAS were dumped in the House Street Disposal Site, an unlined landfill on the crest of a glacial end moraine near Rockford, Michigan, USA. In 2017, PFAS were discovered in groundwater and subsequently, a network of monitoring wells delineated a 2 mi (3 km) PFAS plume migrating downgradient toward the Rogue River.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers collected sediment cores from Green Bay to analyze various phosphorus species, noting that total phosphorus decreased with depth but exhibited unique distribution patterns for different phosphorus types, especially those that are bioavailable.* -
  • Bioavailable phosphorus species like exchangeable-P and iron-bound-P showed significant variation, while organic-P and detrital-apatite-P were stable, indicating that the latter two act as major sinks for phosphorus in the sediment.* -
  • The study found that phosphorus accumulation and regeneration rates varied across regions, with a noted decrease in detrital-apatite-P over recent decades likely linked to human activities, while an increase in organic carbon levels suggests rising trophic status and changes in bottom water conditions.*

A real-time air quality forecasting system was developed using the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) to provide support for flight planning activities during the NOAA Atmospheric Emissions and Reactions Observed from Megacities to Marine Areas (AEROMMA) and NASA Synergistic TEMPO Air Quality Science (STAQS) 2023 field campaigns. The forecasting system operated on two separate domains centered on Chicago, IL, and New York City, NY, and provided 72-hour predictions of atmospheric composition, aerosols, and clouds. This study evaluates the Chicago-centered forecasting system's 1-, 2-, and 3-day ozone (O) forecast skill for Chiwaukee Prairie, WI, a rural area downwind of Chicago that often experiences high levels of O pollution.

The origin of the large variation in FeSe thin films probed by dual-beam pulsed laser deposition.

Beijing National Laboratory for Condensed Matter Physics, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 100190 China.

Unlabelled: FeSe is one of the most enigmatic superconductors. Among the family of iron-based compounds, it has the simplest chemical makeup and structure, and yet it displays superconducting transition temperature ( ) spanning 0 to 15 K for thin films, while it is typically 8 K for single crystals. This large variation of within one family underscores a key challenge associated with understanding superconductivity in iron chalcogenides.
