The major procedure used to correct iodine deficiency is the universal salt iodization by addition of iodide or iodate to salt with an iodine content varying from 7 to 100 mg/kg of salt depending on the country legislation. As an important fraction of consumers in the world prefers natural products over artificial ones, we investigated the industrial feasibility of naturally iodized salt using seaweed as source of iodine. We report the results of the iodine bioavailability in healthy subjects from two seaweeds: Laminaria hyperborea and Gracilaria verrucosa selected due to their high level in iodine as a mineral or an organic form and low levels of heavy metals. As a control we studied in a normal man the bioavailability of pure mineral iodine such as potassium iodide which was excellent i.e. 96.4% and of pure organic iodine such as monoiodotyrosine which was a little lower i.e. 80.0%. Iodine bioavailability from these two seaweeds was studied in nine normal subjects from Marseille (France) which is an iodine sufficient area based on a median urinary iodine level of 137 microg/day and innine normal subjects from Brussels (Belgium) who present a mild iodine deficiency with a value of 73 microg/day. The iodine bioavailability of Gracilaria verrucosa is better than for Laminaria hyperborea (101% versus 90% in Marseille, t=0.812, NS; 85% versus 61.5% in Brussels, t = 2.486, p = 0.024, S*). The urinary excretion of iodine is lower in Brussels than in Marseille for the same seaweed because part of the iodine is stored in the thyroid (101% versus 85% for Gracilaria verrucosa, t = 1.010, NS; 90% versus 61.5% for Laminaria hyperborea, t = 3.879, p= 0.001, S***).

Herein, we report the radical azidoamination of styrenes via the use of a combination of sodium azide and (diphenylmethylene)amino benziodoxolone under visible-light irradiation. This approach to unsymmetrical diamination provides a simple and practical method for constructing vicinal diamine scaffolds with two distinct and easily modifiable amino functionalities.

To evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes of iodine-125 low dose-rate brachytherapy (LDR-BT)-based treatment approaches for ≤ cT3 prostate cancer (PC) patients in China, as well as the effects on the PC immune microenvironment. Data was retrospectively collected from 237 patients with ≤ cT3 PC who were treated with radical prostatectomy (RP) or LDR-BT alone or in combination with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), and biochemical progression-free survival (bPFS), prostate cancer-specific survival (PCSS) and overall survival (OS) rates were compared. In 63 cases, PC patients received RP after biopsy, received at least 6 months of ADT before RP, or received LDR-BT and deferred limited transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).

Background: Technological advancements and globalization have shifted dietary behaviours, contributing to increased chronic disease prevalence in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) like India. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable due to these changes, which can impact their lifelong health. This study aimed to assess the nutritional status of adolescents in public schools in Chandigarh, India.

Identification of Novel Iodinated Polyfluoroalkyl Ether Acids and Other Emerging PFAS in Soils Using a Nontargeted Molecular Network Approach.

Despite advancements in high-resolution screening techniques, the identification of novel perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remains challenging without prior structural information. In view of this, we proposed and implemented a new data-driven algorithm to calculate spectral similarity among PFAS, facilitating the generation of molecular networks to screen for unknown compounds. Using this approach, 81 PFAS across 12 distinct classes were identified in soil samples collected near an industrial park in Shandong Province, China, including the first reported occurrence of 12 iodine-substituted PFAS.

Antiseptics have been used for infection control against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Ethanol (EtOH) was found to be effective against SARS-CoV-2, while chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) was less effective. Therefore, virucidal activity may differ between different classes of antiseptic agents.
