Malignant tumors of the small intestine are uncommon. Carcinoid tumors represent 20% of all malignancies occurring in this segment. We report the case of a 53-year-old female who was treated surgically for intestinal obstruction secondary to carcinoid tumors diffuse to the small intestine. This is the first case described in the literature. Carcinoids are considered less aggressive than the more common intestinal adenocarcinomas, but because of the extensive localization of the neoplasm this case can be considered a high-grade malignancy with an aggressive pattern of growth. Surgical resection, although noncurative in this case, can provide the patient with a long survival rate and a good quality of life.

The European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is a wide-ranging, long-living freshwater species with low reproductive success, mainly due to high predation pressure. The study employed ensemble species distribution models to assess the impacts of climate change on 19 Iranian amphibian species. Genetic diversity can influence fitness components such as survival and reproductive success. Yet the association between genetic diversity and fitness based on neutral loci is sometime very weak and inconsistent, with relationships varying among taxa due to confounding effects of population demography and life history. Fitness-diversity relationships are likely to be stronger and more consistent for genes known to influence phenotypic traits, such as immunity-related genes, and may also depend on the genetic differences between breeding partners.

By targeting the essential viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP), nucleoside analogs (NAs) have exhibited great potential in antiviral therapy for RNA virus-related diseases. However, most ribose-modified NAs do not present broad-spectrum features, likely due to differences in ribose-RdRP interactions across virus families. Here, we show that HNC-1664, an adenosine analog with modifications both in ribose and base, has broad-spectrum antiviral activity against positive-strand coronaviruses and negative-strand arenaviruses.
