An asymptomatic patient with exogenous lipoid pneumonia (ELP) due to silent aspiration of liquid paraffin ingested as a lubricant was diagnosed by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). BAL fluid separated into oily upper phase and lower aqueous phase spontaneously. Microscopic analysis of BAL cells revealed the presence of lipid-laden alveolar macrophages. Classic histochemical staining and electron microscope examination indicated that neutral lipid was dominant but phospholipid was also present in the lipid-laden macrophages. Together with the history of ingestion of liquid paraffin, we identified that the ingested liquid paraffin was the origin of the neutral lipid in the lipid-laden macrophages observed in the BAL fluid.

The chlorinated paraffin (CP) monomer 1,2,5,6,9,10-Hexachlorodecane (CP-4) was subjected to in vitro biotransformation using human and carp liver microsomes. Five types of CP-4 metabolites (OH-, keto-, enol-, aldehyde- and carboxy-CP-4) were identified in human liver microsomer while only mono-OH-CP-4 was found in the carp liver microsomes. Kinetic studies revealed that the formation of mono-, di-, tri-hydroxylated CP-4, keto-, enol-, and aldehyde-CP-4 in human liver microsomes was best described by substrate inhibition models, whereas the formation of carboxylated CP-4 metabolites best fit the Michaelis-Menten model.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) provides a rapid and nondestructive method for biological plasma analysis, offering unparalleled sensitivity and specificity. However, most current studies predominantly employ the drop-cast method, where liquid samples are dried on the SERS substrate for spectral recording. While effective, this method is both time-consuming and inconsistent.

The ability to bring spatial resolution to omics studies enables a deeper understanding of cell populations and interactions in biological tissues. In the case of proteomics, single-cell and spatial approaches have been particularly challenging, due to limitations in sensitivity and throughput relative to other omics fields. Recent developments at the level of sample handling, chromatography, and mass spectrometry have set the stage for proteomics to be established in these new disciplines.
