Published: April 2002

The direct addition of NH across a CC multiple bond (hydroamination) was efficiently catalysed in a liquid-liquid two-phase system. The latter comprised a polar catalyst phase of Zn(CF3SO3)2 in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifuoromethanesulfonate and a substrate mixture in heptane. The possibility of catalysing different hydroamination reactions continuously was demonstrated.

By means of a minimal physical model, we investigate the interplay of two phase transitions at play in chromatin organization: (1) liquid-liquid phase separation within the fluid solvating chromatin, resulting in the formation of biocondensates; and (2) the coil-globule crossover of the chromatin fiber, which drives the condensation or extension of the chain. In our model, a species representing a domain of chromatin is embedded in a binary fluid. This fluid phase separates to form a droplet rich in a macromolecule (B).

Objective: Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) are widely used as gene therapy vectors due to their safety, stability, and long-term expression characteristics. The objective of this work is to develop an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) as a universal platform for the separation and purification of AAVs.

Results: This study utilized polyethylene glycol (PEG)/salt ATPSs to separate and purify various AAV serotypes, including AAV5, AAV8, and AAV9, which focusing on serotype-specific performance and partial empty capsid removal.

Pesticides used in agriculture can contaminate foods like fruits and vegetables, posing health risks to consumers and highlighting the need for effective residue monitoring. This study explores aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) comprising phosphonium or ammonium ionic liquids (ILs) combined with ammonium sulfate as an alternative pre-treatment method for extracting and concentrating the pesticides clomazone, pyraclostrobin, and deltamethrin from strawberry samples. Liquid-liquid equilibrium measurements for each ATPS were conducted, followed by extraction experiments to determine the most efficient systems for pesticide extraction.

Biomolecular condensates formed by liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) are important organizers of biochemistry in living cells. Condensate formation can be dynamically regulated, for example, by protein binding or enzymatic processes. However, how enzymatic reactions can influence condensate shape and control shape transformations is less well understood.

The clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats (CRISPR) /CRISPR-associated proteins (Cas) system is the immune system in bacteria and archaea and has been extensively applied as a critical tool in bioengineering. Investigation of the mechanisms of catalysis of CRISPR/Cas systems in intracellular environments is essential for understanding the underlying catalytic mechanisms and advancing CRISPR-based technologies. Here, the catalysis mechanisms of CRISPR/Cas systems are investigated in an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) comprising PEG and dextran, which simulated the intracellular environment.
