Flash vacuum pyrolysis of bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-6-en-2-one (1) in the source chamber of a UV photoelectron (PE) spectrometer using a CW CO2 laser as a directed heat source facilitated an electrocyclic ring expansion to yield the transient species cyclohepta-2(Z),4(E)-dien-1-one (2), the PE spectrum of which was compared to that of an authentic sample of cyclohepta-2(Z),4(Z)-dien-1-one (4) and confirmed a conrotatory ring opening of 1 that obeys the Woodward-Hoffmann rules.

The preparation of biochar typically involves the pyrolysis of waste organic biomass. Iron-rich magnetic biochar not only inherits the characteristics of high specific surface area and porous structure from biochar but also possesses significant advantages in easy separation and recovery, which has shown great application potential in various fields such as soil improvement and water resource remediation. This study aims to explore the influence of mineral iron on the carbon sequestration capability of biochar during the pyrolysis process.

Organic pollutants, especially dyes, are seriously hazardous to the aquatic system and humans due to their toxicity, and carcinogenic or mutagenic properties. In this study, a biochar prepared from agricultural waste (pecan shells) via pyrolysis was applied to remove the dye pollutant Congo Red from wastewater to avoid a negative effect to the ecosystem. This study also investigated the effect of preparation conditions (temperature and heating rate) on the physicochemical properties and the adsorption performance of biochars.

In this study, green fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with remarkable stability, water solubility, and biocompatibility were synthesized from hazelnut husk (HH) waste material using a novel approach by the pyrolysis method. The optical properties of the synthesized HH-CQDs were characterized by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy (PL), while their structural properties were characterized using various techniques, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). TEM images revealed that HH-CQDs had a spherical shape with diameters ranging from 2 to 10 nm.

Despite significant progress in the catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles, the persistent challenge of requiring additives to prevent condensation byproducts and achieve selectivity toward primary amines demands urgent attention. In this work, we present an integrated approach utilizing a ligand-bridged Ni-Ti bimetallic complex as a precursor to tune Ni-NiO-NiO(OH) heterojunctions and phases of black titania (bTiO) by controlling pyrolytic conditions. This tailored phase distribution and charge dynamics across heterojunctions create an effective balance of acidic and basic sites, enabling the direct hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines without the need for additives.
