Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is an established oral therapy for multiple sclerosis worldwide. Although the clinical efficacy of these fumarate esters has been extensively investigated, the mode of action and pharmacokinetics of fumarates have not been fully elucidated due to their broad-spectrum reactivity and complex metabolism in vivo. To better understand the mechanism of action of DMF and its active metabolite, monomethyl fumarate (MMF), we designed and utilized clickable probes to visualize and enrich probe-modified proteins.

GorillaFACS: The Facial Action Coding System for the Gorilla spp.

PLoS One

January 2025

Human Biology & Primate Cognition Department, Institute of Biology, Leipzig University, Leipzig, Germany.

The Facial Action Coding System (FACS) is an objective observation tool for measuring human facial behaviour. It avoids subjective attributions of meaning by objectively measuring independent movements linked to facial muscles, called Action Units (AUs). FACS has been adapted to 11 other taxa, including most apes, macaques and domestic animals, but not yet gorillas.

Ecological ditches serve as one of the important measures for the concentrated infiltration of stormwater in the construction process of sponge cities. Prolonged concentrated infiltration of stormwater can lead to the accumulation of pollutants and pollution risks in the substrate of ecological ditches. In this study, two different substrate ecological ditches were constructed, namely, a combined substrate ecological ditch with zeolite + ceramsite (EA), and a biological substrate ecological ditch (EB).

Extracting natural active ingredients from plants is an effective way to develop and screen modern drugs. Psoralea corylifolia is a leguminous plant whose seeds have long been used as a Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat psoriasis, rheumatism, dermatitis, and other diseases. To date, several main compounds, including coumarins, flavonoids, monoterpene phenols, and benzofurans, have been identified from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia.

Quinoline is a highly privileged scaffold with significant pharmacological potential. Introducing a carbonyl group into the quinoline ring generates a quinolone ring, which exhibits promising biological properties. Incorporating a carboxamide linkage at different positions within the quinoline and quinolone frameworks has proven an effective strategy for enhancing pharmacological properties, particularly anticancer potency.
