Objectives: It has been demonstrated that clitoral and vaginal tissues express nitric oxide synthase isoforms in a way that parallels that of the penile corpus cavernosum. Considering the role of the vagina in the female sexual response and the anatomic connection between the clitoris and the anterosuperior vaginal wall, our aim was to study the distribution of type 5 phosphodiesterase (PDE5) in the anterosuperior wall of the human vagina.
Methods: Immunohistochemistry was performed on the vaginal tissue of 14 women obtained at autopsy and on exfoliated cells of the vaginal epithelium obtained from 5 healthy female donors. Specific antibodies against PDE5 were tested on both paraffin sections and cytologic smears. Immunoblotting experiments were performed in parallel with the same antibodies.
Results: The histologic analysis of human cadaveric vaginal tissue revealed that PDE5 immunoreactivity was mostly localized in the smooth muscle of vessels, forming a pseudocavernous tissue in the vaginal wall and endothelium. The Skene periurethral glands and vaginal epithelium were also positive for the antibody. The latter finding was confirmed using exfoliated cells of the vaginal epithelium harvested in vivo.
Conclusions: The presence and tissue distribution of PDE5 in the human vagina suggest that the integrated system of nitric oxide synthase-PDE5 may play a physiologic role not only in the male sexual response but also in female sexual arousal.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a very common gynaecologic condition affecting women of reproductive age worldwide. BV is characterized by a depletion of lactic acid-producing species and an increase in strict and facultative anaerobic bacteria that develop a polymicrobial biofilm on the vaginal epithelium. Despite multiple decades of research, the etiology of this infection is still not clear.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Perineorrhaphy with levator myorrhaphy is considered a standard part of colpocleisis. Typically, this is done through a separate incision after colpocleisis is completed. We present a video to demonstrate a modified approach to LeFort colpocleisis incorporating perineorrhaphy into the procedure.

Background: Aerobic vaginitis (AV) is a state of abnormal vaginal microbiota, which is associated with increased numbers of aerobic, enteric bacteria and inflammation of the vaginal epithelium. Anti-microbial treatment combined with anti-inflammatory therapy could be useful in the treatment of this condition. It is known that calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, plays an important role in modulating the immune response in several inflammatory diseases.

BACKGROUND Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the cervix is rare and has high mortality and recurrence rates. The clinical symptoms of cervical NEC, such as abnormal vaginal bleeding and discharge, are similar to those of other cervical cancers. Here, we describe a case involving a 42-year-old woman with cervical NEC accompanied by an isolated large ovarian metastasis.

The objective of this study is to gain a better understanding of the not well understood egg-transportation mechanisms through the female reproductive systems of crabs. For this, Carcinus maenas was chosen as a model to study the cuticular epithelium underlying the cuticle of the vagina and the ventral seminal receptacle. This cuticular epithelium is investigated by performing histochemical and ultrastructural analyses of the epithelial cells.
