Photosynthetic microorganisms, which rely on light-driven electron transfer, store solar energy in self-energy carriers and convert it into bioenergy. Although these microorganisms can operate light-induced charge separation with nearly 100 % quantum efficiency, their practical applications are inherently limited by the photosynthetic energy conversion efficiency. Artificial semiconductors can induce an electronic response to photoexcitation, providing additional excited electrons for natural photosynthesis to improve solar conversion efficiency.

Rieske oxygenases (ROs) are a diverse metalloenzyme class with growing potential in bioconversion and synthetic applications. We postulated that ROs are nonetheless underutilized because they are unstable. Terephthalate dioxygenase (TPA PDB ID 7Q05) is a structurally characterized heterohexameric αβ RO that, with its cognate reductase (TPA), catalyzes the first intracellular step of bacterial polyethylene terephthalate plastic bioconversion.

In silico immunogenicity risk assessment has been an important step in the development path for many biologic therapeutics, including monoclonal antibodies. Even if the source of a given biologic is 'fully human', T cell epitopes that are contained in the sequences of the biologic may activate the immune system, enabling the development of anti-drug antibodies that can reduce drug efficacy and may contribute to adverse events. Computational tools that identify T cell epitopes from primary amino acid sequences have been used to assess the immunogenic potential of therapeutic candidates for several decades.

In recent years, user experience (UX) has gained importance in the field of interactive systems. To ensure its success, interactive systems must be evaluated. As most of the standardized evaluation tools are dedicated to graphical user interfaces (GUIs), the evaluation of voice-based interactive systems or voice user interfaces is still in its infancy.

Retro-biosynthetic approaches have made significant advances in predicting synthesis routes of target biofuel, bio-renewable or bio-active molecules. The use of only cataloged enzymatic activities limits the discovery of new production routes. Recent retro-biosynthetic algorithms increasingly use novel conversions that require altering the substrate or cofactor specificities of existing enzymes while connecting pathways leading to a target metabolite.
