Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) teaching is limited in undergraduate medical curricula. Increasingly doctors are asked to advise on suitability of CAM therapies. This study evaluated whether early undergraduate CAM experience affected subsequent recognition and confidence in answering questions. Students with prior experience of CAM topics were more aware of CAM usage in later observed clinical practice. Students recognized the development of skills in critical evaluation but remained reluctant to advise patients about CAM therapies.

Complementing discourse following a February 2023 event on dietary protein needs in Southeast Asia (SEA), this symposium report summarizes the region's protein intake, while simultaneously examining the impact of dietary shift toward complementary and alternative proteins and their health implications. It highlights the importance of protein quality in dietary evaluations, optimal intake, and sustainability, advocating for environmentally conscious protein production and innovation in future foods. Discussion points, expert opinions, national nutrition data, and relevant literature, addressing protein intake and quality, their impact on human health, and various technologies for future foods production, have been included.

Several chemoenzymatic pathways have been developed for the stereoselective production of the drug tamsulosin. The interest in the exclusive synthesis of its ()-enantiomer lies in the greater activity compared to that displayed by its ()-counterpart for the treatment of kidney stones and benign prostatic hyperplasia disease. Using different types of biocatalysts such as lipases, alcohol dehydrogenases and transaminases, three complementary strategies have been studied to introduce chirality into a key synthetic precursor.

Following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the rise of long COVID, characterized by persistent respiratory and cognitive dysfunctions, has become a significant health concern. This leads to an increased role of complementary and alternative medicine in addressing this condition. However, our comprehension of the effectiveness and safety of herbal medicines for long COVID remains limited.

Although biocatalysis offers complementary or alternative approaches to traditional synthetic methods, the limited range of available enzymatic reactions currently poses challenges in synthesizing a diverse array of desired compounds. Consequently, there is a significant demand for developing novel biocatalytic processes to enable reactions that were previously unattainable. Herein, we report the discovery and subsequent protein engineering of a unique halohydrin dehalogenase to develop a biocatalytic platform for enantioselective formation and ring-opening of oxetanes.

The brain is a complex system with multiple scales and hierarchies, making it challenging to identify abnormalities in individuals with mental disorders. The dynamic segregation and integration of activities across brain regions enable flexible switching between local and global information processing modes. Modeling these scale dynamics within and between brain regions can uncover hidden correlates of brain structure and function in mental disorders.
