Published: June 2002

The possibility of realizing the regime of punctuated spin superradiance is advanced. In this regime, the number of superradiant pulses and the temporal intervals between them can be regulated. This makes it feasible to compose a kind of a Morse code alphabet and, hence, to develop a technique of processing information.

The earliest evidence of deep-sea vertebrates.

Vertebrate macroevolution has been punctuated by fundamental habitat transitions from shallow marine origins to terrestrial, freshwater, and aerial environments. Invasion of the deep sea is a less well-known ecological shift because of low fossilization potential and continual loss of abyssal fossil record by ocean floor subduction. Therefore, there has been a lack of convincing evidence of bottom-living vertebrates from pre-Paleogene deep seas.

Unifying Description of the Vibrational Anomalies of Amorphous Materials.

The vibrational density of states D(ω) of solids controls their thermal and transport properties. In crystals, the low-frequency modes are extended phonons distributed in frequency according to Debye's law, D(ω)∝ω^{2}. In amorphous solids, phonons are damped, and at low frequency D(ω) comprises extended modes in excess over Debye's prediction, leading to the so-called boson peak in D(ω)/ω^{2} at ω_{bp}, and quasilocalized ones.

Neuroimaging evidence of brain abnormalities in mastocytosis.

Mastocytosis is a rare disease in which chronic symptoms are related to mast cell accumulation and activation. Patients can display depression-anxiety-like symptoms and cognitive impairment. The pathophysiology of these symptoms may be associated with tissular mast cell infiltration, mast cell mediator release or both.

Chloroplast functionality has a positive effect on nitric oxide level in soybean cotyledons.

Plant Physiol Biochem

May 2013

Physical Chemistry-PRALIB, School of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, University of Buenos Aires-CONICET, Junín 956, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The subcellular localization of NO generation in soybean cotyledons, and the relationship between NO synthesis and in vivo chloroplast performance were studied. Employing the NO probe 4-aminomethyl-2',7'-difluorofluorescein diacetate (DAF-FM DA) and fluorescence microscopy, a strongly punctuated fluorescence was detected in mesophyll cells. The co-localization of DAF-FM and chlorophyll fluorescence, in confocal laser microscopy images, indicated the presence of NO in the chloroplasts.

We investigate the properties of the Ising-Glauber model on a periodic cubic lattice of linear dimension L after a quench to zero temperature. The resulting evolution is extremely slow, with long periods of wandering on constant energy plateaus, punctuated by occasional energy-decreasing spin-flip events. The characteristic time scale τ for this relaxation grows exponentially with the system size; we provide a heuristic and numerical evidence that τ~exp(L(2)).
