Intermediate valence is one of the typical phenomena of systems with strong electronic correlation. The Anderson impurity model predicts a scaling of the valence with the reduced temperature T/T(K), which is difficult to observe by traditional surface-sensitive electronic spectroscopies. This paper presents results obtained by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS), a bulk-sensitive configuration- and chemical-specific technique. The temperature dependence of the valence of YbInCu(4) and YbAgCu(4) was measured by tuning the incident energy to the resonance of the Yb(2+) spectral component. In the case of YbInCu(4) a sharp valence transition, as known from thermodynamical measurements, has been found. The valence of YbAgCu(4) reveals a smooth dependence consistent with a Kondo temperature T(K) = 70 K. These findings establish RIXS as a powerful tool for measuring bulk electronic properties of solids.

Background: Motivational disturbances are a major harbinger for dementia, being associated with a two- to seven-fold higher conversion rate from mild cognitive impairment. However, there are currently no objective assessment methods for identifying motivational disturbances in older adults (OA). Here, we present preliminary findings from a larger study which aims to validate an objective behavioral measure of effort in OAs by investigating the effects of age, risk, and reward (gain vs.

With the applications of in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrical - measurement, and ambient pressure hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-HAXPES), the characteristics of the topotactic phase transition of LaCoO (LCO) thin films are examined. XRD measurements show clear evidence of structural phase transition (SPT) of the LCO thin films from the perovskite (PV) LaCoO to the brownmillerite (BM) LaCoO phases through the intermediate LaCoO phase at a temperature of 350 °C under high-vacuum conditions, ∼10 mbar. The reverse SPT from BM to PV phases is also found under ambient pressure (>100 mbar) of air near 100 °C.

Background: Motivated behaviors vary widely across individuals and are controlled by a range of environmental and intrinsic factors. However, due to a lack of objective measures, the role of intrinsic extrinsic control of motivation in psychiatric disorders remains poorly understood.

Methods: We developed a novel multi-factorial behavioral task that separates the distinct contributions of intrinsic extrinsic control, and determines their influence on motivation and outcome sensitivity in a range of contextual environments.

Lead oxides (PbO, 1 ≤ ≤ 2) are promising high-capacity and low-cost anodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, the huge lithiation-induced volume expansion of conventional large-sized PbO particles leads to severe electrode pulverization with poor cycling stability. Herein, a rare mixed-valence PbO with a unique hierarchical architecture of nanoparticle-assembled interconnected hollow spheres (denoted PbO NAHSs) is crafted by introducing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) into the solution of generating β-PbO microspheres (MSs), which is exploited for the first time as a potential advanced anode material for LIBs.

The impacting research on emotions of the last decades was carried out with different methods. The most popular was based on the use of a validated sample of slides, the International Affective Pictures System (IAPS), divided mainly into pleasant, neutral and unpleasant categories, and on fMRI as a measure of brain activation induced by these stimuli. With the present coordinate-based meta-analysis (CBMA) based on ALE approach, we aimed to unmask the main brain networks involved in the contrast of pleasant vs.
