Center of pressure (COP) traces have been used to investigate the dynamics of human balance. In this paper we employ a wavelet-based multifractal methodology to identify structural differences in mediolateral and anterioposterior sway between COP traces of healthy and Parkinson's patients. Two statistical techniques are used to summarize the differences in multifractal spectrum (MFS) for both groups. The first technique is a multivariate repeated measures analysis on estimated MF spectra for subjects. The second technique obtains two characteristic measures from each subject's estimated MFS: (i) location and (ii) half-width of the spectrum. These measures present an intuitive summary of the MFS for each subject, allowing for statistical comparisons between the two groups. Both analyzes lead to significant discrimination between Parkinson versus healthy subject's MFS. We find that COP time series of Parkinson patients exhibit a greater degree of roughness as compared to healthy subjects' COP traces. Furthermore, MFS for Parkinson patients are narrower, suggesting a reduction in complexity as compared to the healthy group. The methodology presented here may be helpful in development of clinically relevant measures, including the assessment of severity of conditions as the measures developed here correlate with standard severity measures.

The firing pin impression left on the base of a cartridge case is a critical analytical feature in forensic science. To address the limitations of traditional manual trace analysis and mitigate the risk of secondary damage to physical evidence, we employ a line laser displacement sensor to capture and analyze three-dimensional (3D) traces of fired cartridge cases. However, when using laser displacement sensors to collect traces from metal cartridge cases, the high curvature and reflectivity of the metal surface can cause specular reflections, potentially leading to measurement anomalies in the firing pin impressions.

Bust cards first emerged in the late 1960s as a way of obtaining help following arrest, giving the user the number of a 24-h telephone line to call on arrival at the police station. In the 2020s, such cards were used by direct action groups involved in civil disobedience campaigns, but tracing bust cards back reveals that their original purpose was different. The bust card was a novel way of enabling an individual to push back against the immediate experience of hostile policing, while enabling organizers to collate information on what was happening.

Background: Gait initiation (GI) can be divided into three sections according to the center of pressure (COP) trace (S1, S2, and S3). Almost all studies do not separate each phase of the GI profile in postural control assessment and muscular investigation, whereas differences in the COP and muscles are found in each phase of the GI profile in people with gait problems.
Methods: Twenty individuals with CAI and twenty healthy controls were included in the present study.

Etomidate (ET), a medical anesthetic, is increasingly being incorporated into e-liquids for consumption and abuse as a new psychoactive substance (NPS), leading to significant social issues. In this work, large-area Au micro- and nano-structured ordered arrays were engineered as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates for fast detection and precise identification of ET and its metabolites. This ordered array, characterized by abundant electromagnetic enhancement hotspots and structural uniformity, imparts unique properties to the SERS substrate, including ultra-sensitivity, spectral signal reproducibility, and precise quantitative capabilities.

In most National DNA databases (NDNADB), only single source DNA profiles, and sometimes two-person DNA mixtures, can be searched provided a minimum number of loci (or alleles) is available. DNA profiles that do not meet these criteria (about 14 % of the traces analyzed in Western Switzerland) can be compared locally with candidates upon request from police services, used for one-off search, or remain unused. With the advent of probabilistic genotyping (PG), such complex DNA profiles can be compared to those stored in NDNADB based on likelihood ratios (LRs).
