The viability of Cryptosporidium parvum after exposure to peptide antibiotics was studied by two different methods, a cell culture system and a double fluorogenic staining. The peptides KFFKFFKFF and IKFLKFLKFL exerted high cytotoxic effects on sporozoites, as demonstrated by cell cultures (complete inhibition after 60 min at 100 microg/ml) and flow cytometry (30% after 20 min at 100 microg/ml), but did not affect consistently the oocysts. Clarithromycin and rifabutin demonstrated less activity against sporozoites but higher activity against oocysts (30% after 180 min at 10 microg/ml). The combination between peptides and azithromycin or rifabutin exerted the highest activities.

, a leading non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) pathogen, causes chronic pulmonary infections, particularly in individuals with underlying lung conditions or immunosuppression. Current treatments involve prolonged multi-drug regimens with poor outcomes and significant side effects, highlighting the urgent need for improved therapies. Using a BALB/c mouse model of chronic pulmonary disease, we evaluated the efficacy of individual antibiotics-clarithromycin, clofazimine, and rifabutin-and combination regimens including clarithromycin+bedaquiline and clarithromycin+clofazimine+bedaquiline.

complex is a nontuberculous that has been associated with a wide range of infections, including the skin and soft tissues, central nervous system, and pulmonary system. We discuss the case of a 66-year-old male with a history of coal worker's pneumoconiosis who had undergone a bilateral lung transplant eight years prior and presented with drainage from his right chest incision site. He underwent operative exploration and drainage of the wound.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to explore the epidemiological factors associated with antimicrobial resistance in US children infected with Helicobacter pylori from 2015 to 2022.
  • Out of 273 patients, 43.2% showed resistance to at least one antimicrobial, with clarithromycin being the most common.
  • Findings indicated that resistance varied by race and socioeconomic status, with Asian children having a higher resistance rate compared to white children, and lower household income linked to greater metronidazole resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • Mycobacterium marinum is a slow-growing mycobacterium that can cause skin infections, often linked to aquatic environments and affecting even healthy individuals.
  • A 23-year-old aquarium worker developed chronic skin nodules, initially misdiagnosed as tuberculosis; further biopsy confirmed M. marinum infection, leading to an adjustment in his treatment plan due to liver issues and side effects.
  • The case highlights the importance of repeated biopsies for accurate diagnosis and the complexities involved in treating infections like M. marinum, as treatment regimens are not well-established and may require trial and error.
