Feasible epidemiological approaches are required to make a better assessment of the stage of an epidemic and to monitor its transition through various phases. Application of the Lorenz curve and Gini coefficient to summarise the inequality in STD incidence rates between jurisdictions in Manitoba, Canada, was found to provide useful insights into the concentration of these epidemics over time and thus their transition through epidemic phases. Further exploration of the statistical properties of these and other indices of inequality and their potential application to STD epidemiology is warranted. New epidemiological tools are also required for better monitoring of the impact of prevention and control activities and to inform the content of these activities.

Background: Optimised use of kidney function information might improve cardiac risk prediction in noncardiac surgery.

Methods: In 35,815 patients from the VISION cohort study and 9219 patients from the POISE-2 trial who were ≥45 yr old and underwent nonurgent inpatient noncardiac surgery, we examined (by age and sex) the association between continuous nonlinear preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and the composite of myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery, nonfatal cardiac arrest, or death owing to a cardiac cause within 30 days after surgery. We estimated contributions of predictive information, C-statistic, and net benefit from eGFR and other common patient and surgical characteristics to large multivariable models.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death for women worldwide. One of the risk factors for CVD in women is complications during pregnancy. Pregnancy complications include a wide arena of pathologies, including hypertension, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm delivery and miscarriage.

Oxylipin Profiling of Airway Structural Cells Is Unique and Modified by Relevant Stimuli.

J Proteome Res

January 2025

Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg R3E0J9, Canada.

Oxylipins, diverse lipid mediators derived from fatty acids, play key roles in respiratory physiology, but the contribution of lung structural cells to this diverse profile is not well understood. This study aimed to characterize the oxylipin profiles of airway smooth muscle (ASM), lung fibroblasts (HLF), and epithelial (HBE) cells and define how they shift when they are exposed to stimuli related to contractility, fibrosis, and inflammation. Using HPLC-MS/MS, 162 oxylipins were measured in baseline media from cultured human ASM, HLF, and HBE cells as well as after stimulation with modulators of contractility and central regulators of fibrosis/inflammation.

Background: Mitochondrial bioenergetics are essential for cellular function, specifically the intricacies of the electron transport chain (ETC), with Complex IV playing a crucial role in unraveling the mechanisms governing energy production. Mathematical models offer a valuable approach to simulate these complex processes, providing insights into normal mitochondrial function and aberrations associated with various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders. Our research focuses on introducing and refining a mathematical model, emphasizing Complex IV in the ETC, with objectives including incorporating mitochondrial activity modulation using inhibiting and uncoupling reagents, akin to oxygen consumption experiments.

Background: Despite the clinical importance and significant social burden of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in dementia, the underlying neurobiological mechanism remains poorly understood. Recently, neuroimaging-derived brain-age estimation by machine-learning analysis has shown promise as an individual-level biomarker. We investigated the relationship between NPS and brain-age in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early dementia.
