The authors report on an atypical clinical picture of an acute abdomen syndrome caused by the rupture of an atypically located pyosalpinx in a 9-year old girl.A perforated right-sided pyosalpinx was found at two locations, firmly adhering to a vesicouterine excavation. Right-sided salpingectomy, appendectomy, pelvic cavity lavage and drainage of the Douglas cavity were performed. The pathohistology indicated a perforated pyosalpinx and catarrhal appendicitis. On bacteriological analysis, Escherichia coli was isolated from the vaginal discharge and from the pus collected from the small pelvis.

Fresh vegetables have high water content and low acidity, so drying can extend shelf life, allowing the obtaining of alternative flours for the development of new products. The study aimed to investigate the influence of the melon harvest and off-season on the chemical composition of melon (Cantaloupe, Charentais e Honey Dew) flours and the potential application in products. The flours were evaluated for granulometry, morphology, centesimal composition, lipid and mineral content, total phenolic compound (TPC), antioxidant activity, and technological properties.

Strategies for flood control associated to extreme precipitation events in urban areas are urgent, in order to prevent not only material damages but also to avoid human losses. The construction of flood contention reservoirs ("piscinões") has become a common engineering intervention in urban and peri-urban areas. However, there is a lack of studies focused on the evaluation of environmental impacts of this type of construction.

Water quality of the Jansen Lagoon (São LuÃs, Maranhão State, Brazil) was assessed through histological biomarkers and microbiological parameters. To this end, 29 fish specimens (11 Centropomus undecimalis and 18 Sardinella sp) and eight water samples were collected during the rainy and dry periods of 2013. The lagoon water showed thermotolerant coliform indices above the limit set forth in CONAMA Resolution 357/2005.

A 49-year-old man underwent appendicectomy through a Lanz incision for necrotic appendicitis. He subsequently developed pelvic abscess in the postoperative period, which was drained under computed tomography (CT) guidance. The bacteriology of pus swabs taken during appendicectomy and abscess drainage revealed coliforms.

A sewer main serving a large municipal wastewater system ruptured, discharging approximately 3,000,000 gallons (11,355,000 L) of raw human sewage into a multi-branched tidal creek estuary along the US East Coast. The biochemical oxygen demand caused severe hypoxia in the system, causing a large fish kill. The sewage load led to high fecal coliform bacteria concentrations in the creek (maximum of 270,000 CFU 100ml(-1)), which declined in an approximate logarithmic manner over the first few days.
