Dynamic prediction of nonlinear waveform transitions in a thalamo-cortical neural network under a square sensory control.

Cogn Neurodyn

December 2024

School of Aerospace Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, 710049 Shaanxi People's Republic of China.

Waveform transitions have high correlation to spike wave discharges and polyspike wave discharges in seizure dynamics. This research adopts nonlinear dynamics to study the waveform transitions in a cerebral thalamo-coritcal neural network subjected to a square sensory control via discretization and mappings. The continuous non-smooth network outputs are discretized to establish implicit mapping chains or loops for stable and unstable waveform solutions.

Awareness and driving safety during awake interictal epileptiform discharges in idiopathic generalised epilepsies: A systematic review.

Epilepsy Behav

December 2024

Department of Medicine, St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne (The University of Melbourne), Fitzroy, VIC 3065, Australia; Seer Medical, 278 Queensberry St, Melbourne, VIC 3000, Australia. Electronic address:

Idiopathic generalised epilepsies (IGEs) are a family of epileptic syndromes that commonly occur in childhood or adolescence and can persist into adulthood. Whilst people with IGE may consider themselves seizure free, they often experience interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) that may be associated with unrecognised periods of impaired awareness. As such, the presence of long IEDs associated with unrecognised loss of awareness pose a major challenge in allowing these individuals to drive safely, particularly since not all IEDs are associated with impaired awareness.

Recurrent Falls as the Only Clinical Sign of Cortical-Subcortical Myoclonus: A Case Report.

NeuroSci

March 2024

Neurology Unit, Neuromotor & Rehabilitation Department, Azienda USL-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia, 42123 Reggio Emilia, Italy; (F.C.); (F.V.).

Some authors use the term cortical-subcortical myoclonus to identify a specific type of myoclonus, which differs from classical cortical myoclonus in that the abnormal neuronal activity spreads between the cortical and subcortical circuits, producing diffuse excitation. The EEG shows generalized spike-and-wave discharges that correlate with the myoclonic jerks. We report the case of a 79-year-old patient with a history of right thalamic deep hemorrhagic stroke, with favorable evolution.

Background: Previous studies have localized the origin of "generalized" spike-wave discharges of idiopathic generalized epilepsies to specific brain regions. Although there are studies in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) which have investigated the origin of spike-wave discharges, reports on the propagation of discharges are sparse.

Objective: The current study investigated the propagation of spike-wave discharges in JME, which was investigated by statistically comparing the electroencephalography (EEG)-derived cortical source activity during (a) various phases of spike-wave discharge versus background (eyes closed) activity, and (b) various phases of the first spike wave versus the corresponding phase of subsequent spike waves.

Use of sedation-awakening electroencephalography in dogs with epilepsy.

J Vet Intern Med

September 2024

Division of Clinical Neurology, Department for Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland.

Background: Electroencephalography (EEG) recording protocols have been standardized for humans. Although the utilization of techniques in veterinary medicine is increasing, a standard protocol has not yet been established.

Hypothesis: Assessment of a sedation-awakening EEG protocol in dogs.
