In this study the endometrial morphology of four dogs in oestrus and 10 dogs in late metoestrus was investigated with scanning electron microscopy. In early oestrus the cells were slightly convex with fairly long microvilli and cell boundaries that were apparent but situated on a deeper level than the cell surface. In late oestrus the cells were clearly convex with long and numerous microvilli masking the cell boundaries. At the beginning of late metoestrus the cells became less convex with many but short microvilli and prominent but lower situated cell boundaries. At the end of late metoestrus the cells were flat with very short microvilli and protruding cell borders. These morphological findings were correlated with the cyclic variations of the steroid hormone levels.

Studies in female dogs proved the measurement of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) as a diagnostic tool to distinguish ovarioectomized from intact females or to diagnose ovarian remnant syndrome. Furthermore, its usability to diagnose a granulosa cell tumour and predict litter size was also investigated in female dogs. Although serum AMH was previously shown to increase during the transition from anoestrus to pro-oestrus in dogs, changes in AMH concentration over the entire oestrous cycle have not yet been determined.

This study describes histology and ultrastructure of uterus in the African giant rat during oestrous cycle. Endometrial histology displayed glandular mucosa consisting of lamina epithelialis and lamina propria mucosae. Its epithelium varied between simple and pseudostratified columnar.

In dogs, the termination of the 3-10-month obligate anoestrus involves selection of a cohort of LH-sensitive follicles, presumably from a wave of dominant small antral follicles that would otherwise undergo atresia. The number and size of such follicles appears to increase, especially during the last 50 days of anoestrus when the already elevated concentrations of FSH become further elevated. The final selection and eventual terminal development of these follicles is caused by an increased frequency of high-amplitude LH pulses at the end of anoestrus.

Most hibernating animals are thought to be monoestrous because reproductive activity is subject to strong time constraints. In previous studies, female European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) turned out to have elevated oestradiol levels during late lactation and after weaning, indicating ovarian activity during summer.
