Trace analysis of muramic acid in indoor air using an automated derivatization instrument and GC-MS(2) or GC-MS(3).

An automated derivatization instrument has been developed for the preparation of alditol acetates from bacterial hydrolysates for analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The current report demonstrates the utility of the automated instrument for the more demanding task of trace analysis of muramic acid (Mur) in airborne dust using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS(2)). Conditions for efficient derivatization of Mur, vital for trace analysis, are rigorous including lactam and imido group formation under anhydrous conditions. Furthermore, as the detection limit is lowered, possible contamination or carry-over of samples becomes an increasingly greater consideration and must not occur. The instrument meets these criteria and was successfully used for assaying the levels of Mur in laboratory air, which were found to be much lower than in the previous studies of heavily occupied schools and agricultural environments. The potential for GC-MS(3) in further lowering the detection limit was also demonstrated.

Fatty Acids of European Sardine () White Muscle Can Discriminate Geographic Origin Along the Iberian Atlantic Coast.

The European sardine () ranks among the most valuable species of Iberian fisheries, and the accurate tracing of its geographic origin, once landed, is paramount to securing sustainable management of fishing stocks and discouraging fraudulent practices of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The present study investigated the potential use of white muscle fatty acids (FAs) to successfully discriminate the geographic origin of samples obtained in seven commercially important fishing harbors along the Iberian Atlantic Coast. While 35 FAs were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the white muscle of , the following, as determined by the Boruta algorithm, were key for sample discrimination: 14:0, 22:6-3, 22:5-3, 18:0, 20:5-3, 16:1-7, 16:0, and 18:1-7 (in increasing order of relevance).

The feasibility of the two methodologies was confirmed to compare the results of determining mung bean origins using Raman and Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Spectra from mung beans collected in Baicheng City, Jilin Province; Dorbod Mongol Autonomous, Tailai County, Heilongjiang Province; and Sishui County, Shandong Province, China, were analyzed. We established a traceability model using Principal Component Analysis combined with the K-nearest neighbor method to compare the efficacy of these methods in discriminating the origins of the mung beans.
