Published: June 2002

Objective: to describe clinical and laboratorial characteristics of acute bacterial meningitis in infants.

Method: data from the prospective follow-up of infants with acute bacterial meningitis, admitted at the Hospital Couto Maia between March and December 1997, were analyzed with specific statistical software.

Results: acute bacterial meningitis was more prevalent in infants with ages varying from 6 months to 1 year. The most frequent etiologic agent was Haemophilus influenzae. The global lethality was 25.9% and among the survivors 39.3% left the hospital with some abnormality in the neurological exam compatible with the brain involvement.

Conclusion: acute bacterial meningitis in infants is a high lethality disease that in the majority of cases can be prevented. We consider of great relevance the adoption of health prevention strategies in order to reduce the incidence of this disease.

BACKGROUND Human metapneumovirus (hMPV), classified in the Pneumoviridae family, is primarily known for causing lower respiratory tract infections in children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. However, rare instances have shown that hMPV can also affect other systems, such as the cardiovascular system, leading to conditions like myocarditis. CASE REPORT We describe a 68-year-old man with a medical history of diabetes, hypertension, and liver cirrhosis who presented to the Emergency Department (ED) exhibiting symptoms of fever, cough, and dyspnea.

Antibiotic resistance poses a significant human and economic burden. In France, which ranks among the highest consumers of antibiotics in Europe, 93% of prescriptions are issued in primary care, primarily for respiratory tract infections. It is crucial to limit both the indications and the duration of antibiotic prescriptions, with recently updated recommendations in France aimed at achieving this goal.

It is not clear how CD4 memory T cells are formed from a much larger pool of earlier effector cells. We found that transient systemic bacterial infection rapidly generates several antigen-specific T helper (Th)1 and T follicular helper (Tfh) cell populations with different tissue residence behaviors. Although most cells of all varieties had transcriptomes indicative of cell stress and death at the peak of the response, some had already acquired a memory cell signature characterized by expression of genes involved in cell survival.
