A new glycoside of salicylic aldehyde, paeonicluside, was isolated from the roots of the Greek endemic species Paeonia clusii subsp. clusii and identified as alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->6)-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside of salicylic aldehyde (1). In addition, one characteristic monoterpene and two monoterpene glycosides were identified as paeoniflorigenone, paeoniflorin and benzoyl paeoniflorin, respectively. The structure of 1 was elucidated on the basis of its spectroscopic data and chemical correlation. It is the first time that a derivative of salicylic aldehyde is isolated from the well-studied Paeonia genus.

The poplar bark beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) is a key pest of poplar trees (Malpighiales: Salicaceae, genus ) across northern Spain. However, among the more than 200 poplar clones available on the market, the clone USA 184-411 has the highest susceptibility to attacks. We tested the hypothesis that compounds released by the most susceptible poplar clone chemically mediate behavior.

The title compound, CHClFNO, was synthesized by the condensation between tri-fluoro-methyl-aniline and di-chloro-salicyl-aldehyde by nucleophilic addition, forming a hemiaminal, followed by a dehydration to generate an imine. The compound crystallizes in an ortho-rhom-bic ( = 8) space group with a dihedral angle of 44.70 (5)° between the two aromatic rings.
