The calculated spectral transmittance of a multilayer laser mirror is used to determine the effective index of the single layer equivalent to the multilayer stack. We measure the artificial anisotropy of photoresist thin films whose structure is a one-dimensional, subwavelength grating obtained from interference fringes. The limitation of the theory of the first-order effective index homogenization is discussed. We designed normal-incidence, polarizing coating and a polarization rotator by embedding anisotropic films in simple multilayer structures.

Balance between photoreduction efficiency, cofactor affinity, and allosteric coupling of halogenase flavoenzymes.

Flavin-dependent halogenases (FDHs) are promising candidates for the sustainable production of halogenated organic molecules by biocatalysis. FDHs require only oxygen, halide and a fully reduced flavin adenine dinucleotide (FADH) cofactor to generate the reactive HOX that diffuses 10 Å to the substrate binding pocket and enables regioselective oxidative halogenation. A key challenge for the application of FDHs is the regeneration of the FADH.

Artificial Control of Giant Converse Magnetoelectric Effect in Spintronic Multiferroic Heterostructure.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

December 2024

Center for Spintronics Research Network, Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, 1-3 Machikaneyama, Toyonaka, Osaka, 560-8531, Japan.

To develop voltage-controlled magnetization switching technologies for spintronics applications, a highly (422)-oriented CoFeSi layer on top of the piezoelectric PMN-PT(011) is experimentally demonstrated by inserting a vanadium (V) ultra-thin layer. The strength of the growth-induced magnetic anisotropy of the (422)-oriented CoFeSi layers can be artificially controlled by tuning the thicknesses of the inserted V and the grown CoFeSi layers. As a result, a giant converse magnetoelectric effect (over 10 s m) and a non-volatile binary state at zero electric field are simultaneously achieved in the (422)-oriented CoFeSi/V/PMN-PT(011) multiferroic heterostructure.

The exploration of van der Waals (vdW) materials, renowned for their unique optical properties, is pivotal for advanced photonics. These materials exhibit exceptional optical anisotropy, both in-plane and out-of-plane, making them an ideal platform for novel photonic applications. However, the manual search for vdW materials with giant optical anisotropy is a labor-intensive process unsuitable for the fast screening of materials with unique properties.

Enhancing Rashba Spin-Splitting Strength by Orbital Hybridization.

ACS Nano

December 2024

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore117575, Singapore.

A Rashba spin-splitting state with spin-momentum locking enables the charge-spin interconversion known as the Rashba effect, induced by the interplay of inversion symmetry breaking (ISB) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Enhancing spin-splitting strength is promising to achieve high spin-orbit torque (SOT) efficiency for low-power-consumption spintronic devices. However, the energy scale of natural ISB at the interface is relatively small, leading to the weak Rashba effect.

Intrinsic Localized Excitons in MoSe/CrSBr Heterostructure.

Adv Mater

State Key Laboratory for Artificial Microstructure & Mesoscopic Physics and Frontiers Science Center for Nano-Optoelectronics, School of Physics, Peking University, Beijing, 100871, China.

Despite extensive studies on magnetic proximity effects, the fundamental excitonic properties of the 2D semiconductor-magnet heterostructures remain elusive. Here, the presence of localized excitons in MoSe/CrSBr heterostructures is unveiled, represented by a new photoluminescence emission feature, X. Our findings reveal that X originates from excitons confined by intrinsic defects in the CrSBr layer.
