We developed a new screening test for C. dubliniensis based on its inability to grow on Sabouraud dextrose broth with 6.5% NaCl. A total of 266 clinical yeast isolates and 3 reference strains were tested, including 250 C. albicans and 19 C. dubliniensis strains. All C. albicans isolates tested exhibited significant growth on hypertonic Sabouraud broth up to 96 h, while, all C. dubliniensis isolates did not exhibit any visually detectable growth during the same period.

The conservation of microorganisms is essential for their in-depth study. However, today's most widely used conservation methods, based on the use of distilled water, soil, oils, or silica, do not guarantee the stability of fungal cells, especially dermatophytes. This problem led us to evaluate the conservation capacity of a cryogenic vials system containing glass beads covered in a cryopreservant hypertonic solution as an alternative method of storage of fungal cells at -80°C.

Irrigating wounds with tap water does not increase colonisation, but controlled studies are required for further evidence. Microbial colonisation was assessed in skin wounds, before and after irrigation with tap water, and was compared with irrigation using 0·9% sodium chloride sterile solution. The study included 120 subjects with chronic, traumatic, vascular, pressure or neuropathic wounds.
