Published: June 2002

Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the habits and perceptions of participants in water and other outdoor activities in terms of health risk behaviours.

Method: A survey was undertaken of 1,200 users of a river in the Greater Montreal area.

Results: Only about 30% of respondents used some form of protection against the sun during every outing. Fewer respondents who used some form of motorized water craft wore personal flotation devices (PFDs) compared with those who used non-motorized water craft (63% vs. 83%). Almost half of the respondents avoided all contact with water unfit for swimming, and this was the only instance of behaviour influenced by a perception of serious health risks. The data also indicate that men and respondents under 25 years of age are not inclined to practise the safe behaviours studied.

Interpretation: These results suggest that effective interventions must be developed for the population in general and for certain sub-groups in particular in order to promote the adoption of safe behaviours during water and other outdoor activities.

Solar Evaporator with Dual Gradient Heating Effect for Sustained and Efficient Desalination.

Solar desalination shows promise in tackling freshwater shortages, but challenges arise from the trade-off between water transportation and heat supply, affecting evaporators' efficiency and salt resistance. Additionally, intermittent nature of solar radiation significantly diminishes overall evaporative performance. This study presents dual-gradient heating solar evaporator for efficient desalination.

Radiative Cooling Meta-Fabric Integrated with Knitting Perspiration-Wicking and Coating Heat Conduction.

Radiative cooling is an emerging zero-energy-consumption technology for human body cooling in outdoor scenarios during hot seasons. However, existing radiative cooling textiles are limited by low intrinsic cooling power, high hydrophobicity, and heat-insulating properties, which seriously impede a satisfying cooling effect, perspiration-wicking, and heat dissipation, thus limiting human thermal comfort in practical situations. Here, we developed a radiative cooling meta-fabric that was integrated with high perspiration-wicking and thermal conduction capacity.

The cuticle, an extracellular hydrophobic layer impregnated with waxy lipids, serves as the primary interface between plant leaves and their environment and is thus subject to external cues. A previous study on poplar leaves revealed that environmental conditions outdoors promoted the deposition of about 10-fold more cuticular wax compared to the highly artificial climate of a growth chamber. Given that light was the most significant variable distinguishing the two locations, we hypothesized that the quantity of light might serve as a key driver of foliar wax accumulation.

The overuse of pesticides in agriculture has led to widespread pollution of soils and water resources, becoming a problem of great concern. Nowadays, special attention is given to neonicotinoids, particularly acetamiprid, the only neonicotinoid insecticide allowed for outdoor use in the European Union. Once acetamiprid reaches the soil, adsorption/desorption is the main process determining its bioavailability and environmental fate.

Exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) is commonly observed in endurance athletes, where prolonged physical exertion combined with being unaware of personal hydration needs can lead to excessive water consumption or inadequate sodium intake. Marching band (MB) is an emerging setting for sports medicine professionals. However, there is little research on non-musculoskeletal illnesses among these performing artists.
