Objective: To evaluate the isotype and IgG subclass distribution of anti-pneumococcal antibodies and response to polysaccharide vaccination in otitis prone children.

Methods: IgG1, IgG2 and IgA antibodies to pneumococcal serotypes 3, 4, 6B, 9V, 14, 19F and 23F were determined in otitis prone children and in an age-matched healthy control population. Patients were immunized with a 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine. The antibody response was measured 4 weeks later.

Results: Geometric mean IgA and IgG2 antibody levels for all seven pneumococcal serotypes tested were significantly lower in otitis prone children than in the control population. After immunization, there was no significant increase in geometric mean IgG2 anti-serotype 6B, 19F and 23F pneumococcal polysaccharide (weak immunogenic), but also no increase for IgG2 anti-serotype 4 and 14. Post immunization IgG2 antibody titers for serotypes 6B, 9V and 19F even remained below titers of non-vaccinated controls. Nine out of 29 otitis prone children were colonized nasopharyngeally with Streptococcus pneumoniae during the time of vaccination; these children had an even more severely impaired systemic antibody response.

Conclusions: Otitis prone children, while having normal IgG1 antibody levels, have low IgG2 and IgA anti-polysaccharide antibody levels and fail to respond in these subclasses upon vaccination with pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine.

Article Synopsis
  • Otitis media with effusion (OME) is commonly caused by eustachian tube dysfunction and leads to problems like hearing loss; traditional treatment with tympanostomy tube insertion (TTI) alleviates symptoms but is not a definitive cure.
  • The study aims to assess the effectiveness of a new procedure, balloon dilation eustachian tuboplasty (BDET), in combination with TTI in patients with OME through a randomized controlled trial involving 124 participants.
  • Outcomes will be measured over two years using various assessments to evaluate eustachian tube function, middle ear function, hearing improvement, and quality of life, marking an important investigation into the long-term benefits and safety of this combined treatment.

Relationship between sleep position and otitis media in infants: The Japan environment and children's study.

Auris Nasus Larynx

October 2024

Fukushima Regional Center for the Japan Environment and Children's Study, Fukushima, Japan; Department of Otolaryngology, Fukushima Medical University School of Medicine, Fukushima, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the link between sleep position and the occurrence of otitis media in infants, highlighting that sleep position may influence health outcomes.
  • Data from the Japan Environment Children's Study involving 85,731 infants were analyzed, revealing a higher incidence of otitis media when infants slept in the prone position.
  • The findings suggest that promoting safe sleep positions could help prevent otitis media among infants under 6 months old.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play an important role in innate immunity. Previous studies have shown that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes coding for these innate immune molecules can affect susceptibility to and the outcome of certain diseases. The aim of the present study was to examine the clinical relevance of well-studied TLR1-4 SNPs in individuals who are prone to infections.

Computed Tomographic Findings of Dental Disease and Secondary Diseases of the Head Area in Client-Owned Domestic Rabbits (): 90 Cases.

Animals (Basel)

April 2024

3rd Department and Clinic of Pediatrics, Immunology and Rheumatology of Developmental Age, Faculty of Medicine, Medical University of Wrocław, ul. Koszarowa 5, 51-149 Wroclaw, Poland.

Domestic rabbits have teeth that grow throughout the animal's life and are prone to disease. Clinical signs of dental disease in domestic rabbits are non-specific, and, therefore, a definitive diagnosis usually requires additional methods. This study was carried out on a group of 105 domestic rabbits aged 3 to 9 years.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

May 2024

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital of USTC, Division of Life Sciences and Medicine, University of Science and Technology of China, 443 Huangshan Road, Hefei, 230026, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the occurrence and characteristics of adult otitis media with effusion (OME).
  • It was a retrospective analysis revealing varying incidence rates of OME during different pandemic periods, with unilateral ear involvement and a higher prevalence in males.
  • Results indicated that OME onset typically occurred about 8 days post-COVID-19 diagnosis, with improvement after roughly 12 days of treatment; older adults were more affected in the post-pandemic phase.
