Article Abstract
The photodegradation of gamma-666 on surface soils with low amount of organic substance was studied. The results showed that photodegradation rate of gamma-666 was fitted for pseudo one-order kinetics. The constants of photodegradation rates increased from 0.0052 h-1 to 0.0340 h-1 with the increase of Fe2O3 contents between 0.40% and 5.40% in soils. These results showed that Fe2O3 in soils with low amount of organic substance had remarkable catalysis on photodegradation of gamma-666.

Herein, efficient degradation of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and Lindane, a persistent organic pollutant using guar gum based calcium oxide doped silicon dioxide (GG-CaO@SiO) has been reported. The nanocomposite was prepared by waste egg shell (CaO) and rice husk (SiO) was well characterized. The maximum degradation of HBCD and Lindane were observed at 8 mg catalyst loading, neutral pH, and 2 mg L of pollutant amount.

While the influence of climate change on the fate of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is becoming a topic of global concern, it has yet to be demonstrated how POPs and their transformation products in soil respond to a changing climate at the local scale. We conducted a year-long field experiment with spiked soils to investigate the impact of climate on the dissipation of γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH) and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p'-DDT) as well as the formation of their products. Four sites along an elevational gradient on the eastern Tibetan Plateau were selected to represent four scenarios ranging from a dry and cold to a warm and humid climate.

To achieve enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of lindane, we prepared metal-semiconductor composite nanoparticles (NPs). Zn@ZnO core-shell (CS) nanocomposites, calcined ZnO, and Ag-doped ZnO (ZnO/Ag) nanostructures were prepared using pulsed laser ablation in liquid, calcination, and photodeposition methods, respectively, without using surfactants or catalysts. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy.

Intensive use of chlorinated pesticides from the 1960s to the 1990s has resulted in a diffuse contamination of soils and surface waters in the banana-producing areas of the French West Indies. The purpose of this research was, for the first time, to examine the degradation of two of these persistent pollutants - chlordecone (CLD) and beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (β-HCH) in 1 mg L synthetic aqueous solutions by means of photolysis, (photo-) Fenton oxidation and ozonation processes. Fenton oxidation is not efficient for CLD and yields less than 15% reduction of β-HCH concentration in 5 h.
