Published: March 2002

The fluorescence from tryptophan contains valuable information about the environment local to the indole side-chain. This environment sensitivity coupled with the ability to synthetically or genetically incorporate a single tryptophan residue at specific sites in a polypeptide sequence has provided the membrane biophysicist with powerful tools for examining the structure and dynamics of membrane peptides and proteins. Here we briefly review the use of site-specific tryptophan fluorescence spectroscopy to probe aspects of peptide orientation, structure, and dynamics in lipid bilayers, focusing on recent developments in the literature.

This study investigates the effectiveness and efficiency of two topological data analysis (TDA) techniques, the conventional Mapper (CM) and its variant version, the Ball Mapper (BM), in analyzing the behavior of six major air pollutants (NO, PM, PM, O, CO, and SO) across 60 air quality monitoring stations in Malaysia. Topological graphs produced by CM and BM reveal redundant monitoring stations and geographical relationships corresponding to air pollutant behavior, providing better visualization than traditional hierarchical clustering. Additionally, a comparative analysis of topological graph structures was conducted using node degree distribution, topological graph indices, and Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to evaluate the sensitivity and performance of these TDA techniques.

Predicting the evolution of ascending aortic aneurysm (AscAA) growth is a challenge, complicated by the intricate interplay of aortic geometry, tissue behavior, and blood flow dynamics. We investigate a flow-structural growth and remodeling (FSG) model based on the homogenized constrained mixture theory to simulate realistic AscAA growth evolution. Our approach involves initiating a finite element model with an initial elastin insult, driven by the distribution of Time-Averaged Wall Shear Stress (TAWSS) derived from computational fluid dynamics simulations.

Intensive longitudinal data analysis, commonly used in psychological studies, often concerns outcomes that have strong floor effects, that is, a large percentage at its lowest value. Ignoring a strong floor effect, using regular analysis with modeling assumptions suitable for a continuous-normal outcome, is likely to give misleading results. This article suggests that two-part modeling may provide a solution.

Sub-5 Ångstrom Porosity Tuning in Calixarene-Derived Porous Liquids via Supramolecular Complexation Construction.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Chemical Sciences Division, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Precise sub-Ångstrom-level porosity engineering, which is appealing in gas separations, has been demonstrated in solid carbon, polymer, and framework materials but rarely achieved in the liquid phase. In this work, a gas molecular sieving effect in the liquid phase at sub-5 Ångstrom scale is created via sophisticated porosity tuning in calixarene-derived porous liquids (PLs). Type II PLs are constructed via supramolecular complexation between the sodium salts of calixarene derivatives and crown ether solvents.
