Chromosome number, pairing relationship and meiotic behavior were evaluated in 24 Brazilian accessions of different Paspalum species as an initial screening to determine which of them might be useful in an interspecific hybridization program. The analysis showed that six were diploids, 16 tetraploids and two hexaploids. The pairing relationship was typical for the ploidy level and agreed with reported data. However, the meiotic behavior after diakinesis was much more abnormal than expected considering the pairing relationship. There was a high frequency of abnormal tetrads in the majority of accessions.

Uridine diphosphate-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) are responsible for glycosylation by combining various small lipophilic molecules with sugars to produce water-soluble glycosides, which are crucial for the metabolism of plant secondary metabolites and detoxification in insects. This study presents a genome-wide analysis of the UGT gene family in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, a destructive insect pest of rice in Asia. Based on the similarity to UGT homologs from other organisms, 20 putative NlUGT genes were identified in N.

Purpose: The aim of the current study is to examine if the relationship among three semivowel sounds (/l, ɹ, w/) and between the semivowel and the following vowel differs by children's overall speech proficiency, and if this relationship affects listeners' perceptual judgment of the liquid sounds (/l, ɹ/). The acoustic proximity among the three semivowel sounds and the acoustic characteristics of the following vowel sounds were examined by each child speaker's overall speech sound proficiency and their semivowel accuracy.
Methods: A total of 21 monolingual English-speaking children with and without speech sound disorders produced monosyllabic words that include target semivowel sounds in word-initial position in different vowel contexts.

Protein methylation regulates diverse cellular processes including gene expression and DNA repair. This review discusses the methods of identifying and validating substrates for protein methyltransferases (MTases), as well as the biological roles of methylation. Meanwhile, we outline continued efforts necessary to fully map MTase-substrate pairs and uncover the complex regulatory roles of protein methylation in cellular function.

The paired watershed monitoring approach is widely used to investigate hydrologic processes and water quality, providing streamflow and water quality records for long-term trend analysis, as well as data for developing and testing hydrologic models. In this study we use 20 years of streamflow and water quality data, along with a watershed model, to examine sources of stream nutrients and their changes over time in two small streams within the New York City water supply system. We compare sources and trends in stream nitrate and dissolved phosphorus in the urbanized Amawalk watershed with those of the predominantly forested Boyd Corners watershed in the Croton system of reservoirs.

Background: Disaster nursing involves systematic and professional care provided to communities affected by natural or man-made disasters. With limited resources in global disaster settings, nurses play a crucial role in disaster management. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of integrating 'Disaster Nursing' into nursing curricula on nursing students' perceptions of disaster literacy and preparedness.
