Objective: If overexpression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (CD54) on lymphocytes exists it could have important implications for the pathophysiology of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH).

Study Design: CD54 "in vitro" expression (described as (%) of CD54+cells and CD54 mean fluorescence intensity, MFI) on the peripheral blood and decidual lymphocytes of pregnant with pre-eclampsia (PE) (n=16), transient hypertension (TH) (n=12), and controls (n=9).

Results: The percent (%) of CD54+peripheral blood lymphocytes, CD54 MFI on them and CD54 MFI on decidual lymphocytes were increased especially in PE. During PE the (%) of CD54 decidual lymphocytes correlated negatively with platelet count. In TH the positive correlation between the blood pressure and the (%) of CD54 peripheral blood lymphocytes as well as CD54 MFI on decidual lymphocytes were found.

Conclusions: (1) PIH, especially PE, is accompanied by overexpression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) on peripheral blood and decidual lymphocytes studied "in vitro", (2) Some of the parameters studied seem to correlate with clinical markers of PIH intensity but this fact needs further investigations using larger subject groups.

Association of Arachidonic Acid Metabolism Related Genes With Endometrial Immune Microenvironment and Oxidative Stress in Coupes With Recurrent Implantation Failure.

Am J Reprod Immunol

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine and Offspring Health, Center for Reproductive Medicine, Institute of Women, Children and Reproductive Health, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, China.

Background: Alterations in lipid metabolism were reported to impact human fertility; however, there is limited evidence on the association of lipid metabolism with embryo implantation as well as the etiology of recurrent implantation failure (RIF), especially regarding arachidonic acid metabolism.

Methods: Experimental verification research (16 RIF patients and 30 control patients) based on GEO database analysis (24 RIF patients and 24 control patients). The methods in bioinformatics included differential gene screening, functional enrichment analysis, protein-protein interaction network, cluster analysis, weighted gene co-expression network analysis, and so forth.

Preeclampsia is one of the most severe obstetric complications, yet its pathogenesis remains unclear. Decidual natural killer (dNK) cells, the most abundant immune cells at the maternal-fetal interface, are closely associated with preeclampsia due to abnormalities in their quantity, phenotype, and function. This review summarizes the molecular mechanisms by which dNK cells regulate extravillous trophoblast (EVT) invasion, promote uterine spiral artery remodeling, and maintain immune tolerance.

AMPK-mTOR pathway modulates glycolysis reprogramming in unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion.

BMC Pregnancy Childbirth

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Fujian Medical University, 20 Chazhong Road, Fuzhou, Fujian, 350005, P.R. China.

Background: Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA), whose underlying cause has yet to be fully elucidated, is often classified as unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA). Promoting the differentiation of CD4 T cells into Tregs may be the key to prevent URSA. The differentiation of CD4 T cells was controlled by mTOR, but the regulatory mechanism is still unclear.

Reproductive failures, such as recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) and recurrent implantation failures (RIF) are a major challenge for reproductive medicine. The current management of RPL and RIF cases identifies some causes for unsuccessful pregnancy in up to half of patients. Several studies have suggested that immune disorders are responsible for an important portion of unexplained cases of RPL and RIF.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with thin endometrium often face difficulties with pregnancy during frozen-thawed embryo transfers; enhancing endometrial receptivity may help.
  • A study involving 150 patients tested the effects of intrauterine perfusion of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) on pregnancy outcomes, comparing results among three groups (control, HCG, and G-CSF).
  • The G-CSF group showed significant improvements in endometrial thickness, blood flow, and Treg levels, resulting in higher pregnancy rates than both the HCG and control groups, indicating G-CSF's potential benefit for patients with thin endometrium.
