This study was conducted to assess the effects of fumonisin B (FB) on the jejunum of pigs using a novel ex vivo model conducted in parallel with an in vivo trial. For the in vivo model, twelve male 28 to 70-days-old pigs were subjected to two treatments of six animals each: the control group, fed a basal diet (BD), and the FB group, fed the BD + 50 mg/kg FB. At 70 days, the animals were slaughtered and one jejunal sample was collected from each pig for further histopathological analyses.

Currently, the TAAR1 receptor has been identified in various cell groups in the intestinal wall. It recognizes biogenic amine compounds like phenylethylamine or tyramine, which are products of decarboxylation of phenylalanine and tyrosine by endogenous or bacterial decarboxylases. Since several gut bacteria produce these amines, TAAR1 is suggested to be involved in the interaction between the host and gut microbiota.

Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasite that has the ability to reproduce within humans, which explains its persistence for many years. It lives in the duodenum and ileum, between the enterocytes, and opens up to the intestinal lumen. Historically it is associated with tropical and subtropical rural areas, but its development has been seen in microclimates that favour the biological cycle.

Research on SARS-CoV-2, the viral pathogen that causes COVID-19, has identified angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as the primary viral receptor. Several genes that encode viral cofactors, such as TMPRSS2, NRP1, CTSL, and possibly KIM1, have since been discovered. Glutamyl aminopeptidase (APA), encoded by the gene ENPEP, is another cofactor candidate due to similarities in its biological role and high correlation with ACE2 and other human coronavirus receptors, such as aminopeptidase N (APN) and dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4).

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening disease in premature infants, characterized by high mortality. Recent studies increasingly highlight the role of gut dysbiosis in NEC pathogenesis. Although probiotics have shown some efficacy in preventing NEC, further research is needed to determine potential strains and approaches.
