We have previously shown that long-term thyroxine administration can protect the heart against ischemia. In the present study, we investigated whether thyroxine-induced cardioprotection can mimic the pattern of protection that is afforded by a well-established cardioprotective means such as ischemic preconditioning. In a Langendorff-perfused rat heart preparation, after an initial stabilization, normal and thyroxine-treated hearts were subjected to 20 minutes of zero-flow global ischemia followed by 45 minutes of reperfusion. In thyroxine-treated hearts, phospho-p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) was found to be less at the end of the ischemic period, whereas ischemic contracture was accelerated and postischemic recovery was increased in comparison to normal hearts. In addition, normal hearts were subjected to a four-cycle preconditioning protocol before ischemia. Phospho-p38 MAPK was found to be less at the end of the ischemic period in preconditioned hearts, whereas ischemic contracture was accelerated and postischemic functional recovery was increased in those hearts in comparison to nonpreconditioned hearts. An increase in basal expression and phosphorylation of PKCdelta was also found to occur after long-term thyroxine administration. We conclude that long-term thyroxine administration can protect the heart from ischemic injury through a pattern of protection that closely resembles that of ischemic preconditioning.
In recent years, there has been growing concern about the long-term health effects of chemical exposure in pets, particularly dogs and cats, from sources such as pet food and house dust. Domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus) and dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) are continuously exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), with particular attention being paid to the toxicity of their metabolites, hydroxylated PCBs (OH-PCBs) and methylsulfonyl PCBs (MeSO-PCBs). However, the tissue distribution and species-specific differences of these PCB metabolites in domestic animals have not been fully elucidated.
Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare complication primarily associated with thyrotoxicosis, particularly in individuals with Graves' disease. While more common in males aged 20 to 40, it can occur across all ethnic backgrounds. It is the most common type of acquired periodic paralysis.
We present a case of new-onset Graves' disease in a 40-year-old woman following COVID-19 infection. The patient experienced hand tremors, palpitations, shortness of breath with minimal exertion, and excessive sweating one week after recovering from COVID-19. Thyroid function tests revealed thyrotoxicosis, elevated free thyroxine, free triiodothyronine, and suppressed thyroid-stimulating hormone levels.
Objective: To understand the dietary patterns of adults and explore their association with iodine nutritional levels and thyroid function in adults.
Design: We randomly collected 5 ml of adult urine samples and measured urinary iodine concentration by cerium arsenate-catalyzed spectrophotometry. A serum sample of 5 ml was collected for the determination of free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4) and thyrotropin (TSH), and diet-related information was collected through a food frequency questionnaire.
