We present the study of multimode glass waveguides fabricated by a silver-ion electromigration process followed by a diffusion process. The study is concerned mainly with the diffusion process, which occurs by variation of the diffusion time. The obtained guides are analyzed by the prism-coupling technique, which determines their effective refractive indices that are treated by the inverse WKB method, assumed to be proportional to the silver ions' concentration profiles, for which a Gaussian model is attributed. Diffusion coefficients then are determined from these Gaussian profiles experimentally by both methods. These diffusion coefficients show a concentration dependence related to the variation of the diffusion time. A mathematical model representing the best fit to this dependence is also presented. Finally, our results are compared with other research results, with which we find good agreement.

In this paper, we present a new computational framework for the simulation of airway resistance, the fraction of exhaled nitric oxide, and the diffusion capacity for nitric oxide in healthy and unhealthy lungs. Our approach is firstly based on a realistic representation of the geometry of healthy lungs as a function of body mass, which compares well with data from the literature, particularly in terms of lung volume and alveolar surface area. The original way in which this geometry is created, including an individual definition of the airways in the first seven generations of the lungs, makes it possible to consider the heterogeneous nature of the lungs in terms of perfusion and ventilation.

Polyimide (PI)-based gas separation membranes are of great interest in the field of H purification owing to their good thermal stability, chemical stability, and mechanical properties. Among polyimide-based membranes, intrinsically microporous polyimides are easily soluble in common organic solvents, showing great potential for fabricating hollow fiber gas separation membranes. However, based on the solution-diffusion model, improving the free volume or the movability of polymer chains can improve gas permeability, but would result in poor thermal stability.

An imaging biomarker that more strongly correlates with post-EVT functional outcome would be helpful for clinical prognosis and serve as a surrogate outcome measure in trials of EVT-adjuvant therapies. Here, we aimed to validate a novel MRI-based metric, infarct density, which leverages post-EVT apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) as a marker of infarct severity.

Roll bonding of aluminum/magnesium laminates combines the good corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys with the beneficial mechanical properties of magnesium alloys. We studied the microstructure of aluminum Al-1051/AZ31 magnesium laminates fabricated by the roll-bonding process. The fabricated laminates were investigated in the as-fabricated condition and after subsequent stress relief annealing treatment at temperatures ranging from 200 °C to 400 °C.

Introduction: Meticillin resistant (MRSA) is a major contributor to surgical site infections in post-operative patients. Hospital environments harbor MRSA, contributing to higher risk of nosocomial infections. Meticillin resistance is conferred by acquisition of gene, typically carried on mobile genetic element called Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome (SCC).
