A simple method for measuring the hydrophobicity of bacterial cells is proposed, which is based on the spectrophotometric evaluation of cell adherence to chloroform drops in a biphasic water-chloroform mixture.

Caries begin with an imbalance between demineralization and remineralization due to the continuous acid production by cariogenic bacteria. However, the development of dental materials that could prevent and treat caries a simple and efficient mechanism has always been a challenge. To address this issue, therapeutic nanoparticles composed of a dendritic polyglutamic acid (DPGlu) and chelerythrine (CHE) complex (DPGlu@CHE) were developed hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds.

As an evolutionarily conserved family of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), cecropins play an important role in innate immunity. But their inevitable weaknesses, including poor proteolytic stability and unpredictable cytotoxicity, severely hindered their clinical applications. Considering their two-helical structure, all-hydrocarbon stapling was performed on cecropin A, successfully generating 27 (, + 4) stapled derivatives.

Nanocoating represents an effective strategy for creating a protective barrier on probiotic surfaces, preventing them from damage. Here, we developed HAQ microcapsules comprising Limosilactobacillus fermentum RC4, which were nanocoated with hyaluronic acid and quinoa protein. We characterized the stability and safety, and investigated the intermolecular forces and transcriptome to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the nanocoating.

High-resolution structure determination of membrane proteins typically requires reconstitution into artificial membrane mimics. The choice of the specific membrane substitute can strongly affect the protein's specific activity, stability, and conformational spectrum, potentially leading to errors or misinterpretation during analysis. The bacterial ATP-binding cassette transporter MsbA is a prominent example of such environment-specific bias.

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) affects 5% to 10% of all pregnancies in developed countries and is the second most leading cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity. Life-long consequences of FGR range from learning and behavioral issues to cerebral palsy. To support the newborn brain following FGR, timely and accessible neuroprotection strategies are needed.
