Neural networks are still frustrating tools in the data mining arsenal. They exhibit excellent modelling performance, but do not give a clue about the structure of their models. We propose a methodology to explain the classification obtained by a multilayer perceptron. We introduce the concept of 'causal importance' and define a saliency measurement allowing the selection of relevant variables. Once the model is trained with the relevant variables only, we define a clustering of the data built from the hidden layer representation. Combining the saliency and the causal importance on a cluster by cluster basis allows an interpretation of the neural network classifier to be built. We illustrate the performances of this methodology on three benchmark datasets.

Purpose: Sharing aggregate results with research participants is a widely agreed-upon ethical obligation; yet, there is little research on communicating study results to diverse populations enrolled in genomics research. This article describes the cocreation of a visual narrative to explain research findings to families enrolled in a clinical genomics research study.
Methods: The design process involved researchers, clinicians, study participants, a physician illustrator, and a health communications expert.

Introduction: Our recent meta-analyses have demonstrated that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) causes a range of mean changes in various measures and predictors of endurance and sprint performance in athletes. Here, we extend the analyses to relationships between mean changes of these measures and consider implications for understanding and improving HIIT that were not apparent in the previous analyses.
Methods: The data were mean changes from HIIT with highly trained endurance and elite other (mainly team sport) athletes in studies where two or more measures or predictors of performance were available.

Metyrapone is commonly used in the initial management of Cushing's syndrome to reduce hypercortisolemia, but its optimal dosage and timing can vary significantly between patients. Currently, there are limited guidelines on adjustment methods for its administration to individual needs. This study aimed to evaluate responsiveness of each patient to metyrapone and identify the patient characteristics associated with the indices of cortisol responsiveness following a low-dose metyrapone.

Background: Predicting dementia early has major implications for clinical management and patient outcomes. Yet, we still lack sensitive tools for stratifying patients early, resulting in patients being undiagnosed or wrongly diagnosed. Despite rapid expansion in machine learning models for dementia prediction, limited model interpretability and generalizability impede translation to the clinic.

Background: Evidence amounted early that migrants, who are often side-lined in pandemic response or preparedness plans, are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences. However, synthesised evidence that quantifies the magnitude of inequalities in infection risk, disease outcomes, consequences of pandemic measures or that explains the underlying mechanisms is lacking.
Methods: We conducted a systematic review searching 25 databases and grey literature (12/2019 to 09/2023) and considered empirical articles covering migrants, refugees, asylum-seekers, and internally displaced persons reporting COVID-19 cases, hospitalisation, ICU admission, mortality, COVID-19 vaccination rates or health consequences of pandemic measures.
