In Wistar rats kept for 15, 30 and 60 days in a hypokinetic state in special cages, alteration of some gastrointestinal glands was studied by means of histochemical and electron microscopic methods. After 15-30 days of hypokinesia, a decrease was found in the muco-polysaccharide content of the submaxillary, gastric and duodenal glands. The intestinal goblet cells appeared vacuolated. The oxyntic cells, which secrete HCl, as well as the G antral cells, which secrete gastrin, were in an active state. The hypokinetic rats exhibited increased gastric secretion. The electron microscopic aspect of the principal cells corresponded to augmented pepsin secretion. The enterocytes showed an increase in their leucine aminopeptidase, acid phosphatase and glucose-6-phosphatase content. In the submucosa of the fundus of the stomach an accumulation of eosinophils was observed. These modifications were more striking after 15 than after 30 days, and disappeared after 60 days of hypokinesia. These morphological and functional changes may be explained by glucocorticoid hypersecretion corresponding to a stress reaction.

Introduction: Podophyllotoxin (PPT) is a high-content and high-activity compound extracted from the traditional Chinese medicinal plant () which exhibits various biological activities. However, its severe toxicity limits its use. In clinical settings, patients with poisoning often experience adverse reactions when taking large doses in a short period.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is an incurable neurodegenerative disease characterized by 4-repeat (0N/4R)-Tau protein accumulation in CNS neurons. We generated transgenic zebrafish expressing human 0N/4R-Tau to investigate PSP pathophysiology. Tau zebrafish replicated multiple features of PSP, including: decreased survival; hypokinesia; impaired optokinetic responses; neurodegeneration; neuroinflammation; synapse loss; and Tau hyperphosphorylation, misfolding, mislocalization, insolubility, truncation, and oligomerization.

Metabolic Profile in Rats during Long-Term Restriction of Motor Activity.

Bull Exp Biol Med

June 2024

Kirov State Medical University, Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Kirov, Russia.

We performed a comprehensive study of protein (total protein, medium-molecular-weight peptides, creatinine, and urea), purine (uric acid), and lipid (cholesterol, triglycerides) metabolism, activity of AST, ALT, and acid phosphatase in blood plasma of white male rats under conditions of restriction of motor activity up to 28 days. Patterns of changes in metabolic profile during hypokinesia were established: prevalence of catabolic processes and atherogenic shifts in the lipid spectrum with maximum manifestation on 14-21 days of the experiment.

Alleviation of motor impairment by aerobic exercise (AE) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients points to activation of neurobiological mechanisms that may be targetable by therapeutic approaches. However, evidence for AE-related recovery of striatal dopamine (DA) signaling or tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) loss has been inconsistent in rodent studies. This ambiguity may be related to the timing of AE intervention in relation to the status of nigrostriatal neuron loss.

Functional interaction of abnormal beta and gamma oscillations on bradykinesia in parkinsonian rats.

Electronic address:

Bradykinesia, a debilitating symptom characterized by impaired movement initiation and reduced speed in Parkinson's disease (PD), is associated with abnormal oscillatory activity in the motor cortex-basal ganglia circuit. We investigated the interplay between abnormal beta and gamma oscillations in relation to bradykinesia in parkinsonian rats. Our findings showed reduced movement activities in parkinsonian rats, accompanied by enhanced high beta oscillations in the motor cortex, which are closely associated with movement transitional difficulties.
