Background: Several epidemiological studies and intervention trials have demonstrated that grapes and blueberries, which are rich in flavanols, can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the mechanisms of action of these compounds remain unclear due to their low bioavailability.

Objective: This study aimed to characterize the sensory properties, blood flow velocity, and oxidative stress of a polyphenol rich grape and blueberry extract (PEGB) containing approximately 16% flavanols (11% monomers and 4% dimers).

The endothelin-B receptor (ETR) mediates vasodilation in young women, an effect that is absent in postmenopausal women. We have previously demonstrated that ETR-mediated vasodilation is regulated by estradiol (E) in young women; however, the impact of E on ETR function in postmenopausal women remains unknown. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that E exposure restores ETR-mediated dilation in postmenopausal women.

Impact of Postoperative Norepinephrine Administration on Free Flap Flow.

J Clin Med

December 2024

Division of Hand, Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, University Hospital, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, 81377 Munich, Germany.

The perioperative interplay between blood pressure, vasopressors, and macrocirculation is well established. However, in the context of free flap surgery, the potential impact of these factors on microvascular flow remains elusive. The aim was to evaluate the impact of norepinephrine administration on the microcirculation of free flaps.

Microcirculation is an essential system that regulates oxygen and nutrients to cells and tissues in response to various environmental stimuli and pathophysiological conditions. Diabetes mellitus can cause microvascular complications including nephropathy, neuropathy, and retinopathy. The pathogenesis of microvascular dysfunction in diabetes is associated with hyperglycemia and the result of an interplay of various factors.

Radical lymphadenectomy is the critical component of surgery for esophageal cancer. However, lymphadenectomy significantly contributes to postoperative morbidity, particularly in terms of pulmonary complications following esophagectomy. Function-preserving mediastinal lymphadenectomy seeks to balance the procedure's necessary radicality and optimal functional outcomes.
