Article Synopsis
  • When a mouse observes a familiar female in pain, it displays various social behaviors like allolicking and huddling, with females showing more allolicking than males but less allogrooming.
  • The study found that changes in ovarian estrogen through ovariectomy affected these behaviors, reducing allolicking and altering self-grooming while diminishing the social support usually provided during pain.
  • Additionally, treatment with estrogen (but not progesterone) restored allolicking behaviors and confirmed that both caring behavior and the experience of socially transferred pain are influenced by estrogen levels.

The role of sniffing relative to immune function has attracted considerable attention. The present study investigated the immunomodulatory effects of peanut oil odor on cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced immunosuppressed mice. The subset of mice subjected to prolonged (8 h) sniffing peanut oil odor (PL) demonstrated significantly elevated levels of agouti-related peptide, neuropeptide Y, and glutamate ( < 0.

Sniffing oxytocin: Nose to brain or nose to blood?

Mol Psychiatry

July 2023

Center of Psychosomatic Medicine, Sichuan Provincial Center for Mental Health, Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, China.

In recent years ample studies have reported that intranasal administration of the neuropeptide oxytocin can facilitate social motivation and cognition in healthy and clinical populations. However, it is still unclear how effects are mediated since intranasally administered oxytocin can both directly enter the brain (nose to brain) and increase peripheral vascular concentrations (nose to blood). The relative functional contributions of these routes are not established and have received insufficient attention in the field.

Psychopathy is a personality disorder associated with criminal behavior and violent recidivism, and therefore a burden to society. Social dominance is one of the characteristics of psychopathy that might contribute to these problems. Nevertheless, only few studies have objectively measured the relationship between socially dominant behavior and psychopathy.
