Objectives: Good oral hygiene measures are important for successful orthodontic treatment. They involve various types of mouthwashes which have been reported to cause alteration of mechanical properties of archwires. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a new kind of chlorine-dioxide-containing mouthwash on the mechanical properties and surface morphology of stainless steel orthodontic archwires against the already prevalent chlorhexidine mouthwash in the market.

: Orthodontic archwires undergo chemical and structural changes in the complex intraoral environment. The present work aims to investigate the safe duration for intraoral use (related to the nickel release hypothesis) of different types of nickel-containing wires. By analyzing how the nickel content (NC) varies over time, we aim to provide practical recommendations for the optimal use of said archwires.

NiTi alloys are an important class of biomaterials with extensive clinical applications such as cardiovascular stents, orthodontic arch-wires, esophageal stents, orthopedic implants and more. However, the long-term implantation of NiTi alloys presents significant challenges due to their susceptibility to wear, corrosion and the excessive release of harmful nickel ions. These factors can severely compromise both the biocompatibility and the overall service life of the implants.

Accidental ingestion of foreign bodies frequently necessitates emergency department visits, with many cases requiring surgical consultation. Although most ingested items pass through the gastrointestinal tract uneventfully, orthodontic components, such as wires, present a specific risk due to their shape and material properties. This report describes a rare case of a 13-year-old male adolescent whose initial presentation suggested ingestion of a chicken bone.
