Historically hematopoietic stem cells are believed to be predominantly dormant but could be induced into active cell cycle under specific conditions. This review, coupled with years of research from our laboratory, challenges this belief by demonstrating a significant portion of hematopoietic stem cells are actively cycling rather than quiescent. This addresses a major heuristic error in the understanding of hematopoietic stem cells that has shaped this field for decades.

High-LET-type cell survival curves have been observed in cells that were allowed to incorporate 125I-UdR into their DNA. Incorporation of tritiated thymidine into the DNA of cells has also been shown to result in an increase in relative biological effectiveness in cell survival experiments, but the increase is smaller than observed after incorporation of 125I-UdR. These findings are explained in the literature by the overall complexity of the induced DNA damage resulting from energies of the ejected electron(s) during the decay of 3H and 125I.

Background: Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) have been found to take part in type 2 inflammation by secreting T2 cytokines. Apolipoprotein A-I (Apo-AI), a major structural and functional protein of high-density lipoproteins, has anti-inflammatory effects on neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, and eosinophils. However, its effects on ILC2s are not well characterized.

Tritium is a betta emitter radionuclide. Being an isotope of hydrogen, it is easily transferred to different environmental compartments, and to human and non-human biota. Considering that tritium levels are expected to rise in the upcoming decades with the development of nuclear facilities producing tritium using fission processes, investigating the potential toxicity of tritium to human and non-human biota is necessary.

Tritium is found in the environment under three forms: free in the water, gaseous, and bound to organic matter. Once internalized in living organisms, it can be found in two forms: tissue free water tritium (TFWT) and organically bound tritium (OBT). This study aims to better understand OBT internalization in living organisms and to show the complementarity between experimental procedures and microdosimetry simulations that have often been used to obtain more information on imparted energy to cell nuclei.
