Support vector machines (SVMs) are the state-of-the-art models for many classification problems, but they suffer from the complexity of their training algorithm, which is at least quadratic with respect to the number of examples. Hence, it is hopeless to try to solve real-life problems having more than a few hundred thousand examples with SVMs. This article proposes a new mixture of SVMs that can be easily implemented in parallel and where each SVM is trained on a small subset of the whole data set. Experiments on a large benchmark data set (Forest) yielded significant time improvement (time complexity appears empirically to locally grow linearly with the number of examples). In addition, and surprisingly, a significant improvement in generalization was observed.

The fast detection of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) adulteration with poorer quality and lower price vegetable oils is important for the protection of consumers and the market of olive oil from fraudulent activities, the latter exhibiting an increasing trend worldwide during the last few years. In this work, two optical spectroscopic techniques, namely, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, are employed and are assessed for EVOO adulteration detection, using the same set of olive oil samples. In total, 184 samples were studied, including 40 EVOOs and 144 binary mixtures with pomace, soybean, corn, and sunflower oils, at various concentrations (ranging from 10 to 90% /).

Molding sand mixtures used in the foundry industry consist of various sands (quartz sands, chromite sands, etc.) and additives such as bentonite. The optimum control of the processes involved in using the mixtures and in their regeneration after the casting requires an efficient in-line monitoring method that is not available today.

Food quality assurance is an important field that directly affects public health. The organoleptic aroma of food is of crucial significance to evaluate and confirm food quality and origin. The volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions (detectable aroma) from foods are unique and provide a basis to predict and evaluate food quality.

Brain signals are nonlinear and nonstationary time series, which provide information about spatiotemporal patterns of electrical activity in the brain. CHMMs are suitable tools for modeling multi-channel time-series dependent on both time and space, but state-space parameters grow exponentially with the number of channels. To cope with this limitation, we consider the influence model as the interaction of hidden Markov chains called Latent Structure Influence Models (LSIMs).
