In systems at phase transitions, two phases of the same substance may coexist for a long time before one of them dominates. We show that a similar phenomenon occurs in systems with delayed feedback, where short-term stable oscillatory patterns can also have very long lifetimes before vanishing into constant or periodic steady states.

Orange carotenoid protein (OCP) is a photoactive protein that mediates photoprotection in cyanobacteria. OCP binds different ketocarotenoid chromophores such as echinenone (ECN), 3'- hydroxyechinenone (hECN), and canthaxanthin (CAN). In the dark, OCP is in an inactive orange form known as OCP; upon illumination, a red active state is formed, referred to as OCP, that can interact with the phycobilisome.

Optimal brain function is shaped by a combination of global information integration, facilitated by long-range connections, and local processing, which relies on short-range connections and underlying biological factors. With aging, anatomical connectivity undergoes significant deterioration, which affects the brain's overall function. Despite the structural loss, previous research has shown that normative patterns of functions remain intact across the lifespan, defined as the compensatory mechanism of the aging brain.

Multi-state metastability in neuroimaging signals reflects the brain's flexibility to transition between network configurations in response to changing environments or tasks. We modeled these dynamics with a Kuramoto network of 90 nodes oscillating at an intrinsic frequency of 40 Hz, interconnected using human brain structural connectivity strengths and delays. We simulated this model for 30 min to generate multi-state metastability.

Naphthalene is a fungicide that can also be a phase-change agent owing to its high crystallization enthalpy at about 80 °C. The relatively rapid evaporation of naphthalene as a fungicide and its shape instability after melting are problems solved in this work by its placement into a cured epoxy matrix. The work's research materials included diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A as an epoxy resin, 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone as its hardener, and naphthalene as a phase-change agent or a fungicide.

Herein, we report the synthesis of the naphthalendiimides (NDIs) 1-3 endowed with peripheral 3,4,5-trialkoxybenzamide units and a variable number of 1,2,3-triazole rings. Both the benzamide units and the triazole rings are able to form six- or seven-membered intramolecularly H-bonded pseudocycles that behave as metastable monomeric units. Whilst freshly prepared solutions of 1-3 afford H-type aggregates, the presence or lack of the 1,2,3-triazole rings strongly conditions the kinetics and stability of the resulting aggregated species.
