Objective: We hypothesized that measuring stroke volume variation (SVV) during mechanical ventilation by continuous arterial pulse contour analysis allows the accurate prediction and monitoring of changes in cardiac index (CI) in response to volume administration.
Design And Setting: Prospective study in an university hospital.
Patients: Twenty mechanically ventilated patients following cardiac surgery.
Interventions: Volume loading with oxypolygelatin (3.5%) 20 ml x body mass index over 10 min.
Measurements And Results: SVV, central venous pressure (CVP), pulmonary artery occlusion pressure (PAOP), left ventricular end-diastolic area index (LVEDAI) by transesophageal echocardiography, intrathoracic blood volume index (ITBVI) by transpulmonary thermodilution and CI were determined immediately before and after volume loading. SVV decreased, while CI, CVP, PAOP, ITBVI, and LVEDAI increased significantly. Percentage changes in CI were significantly correlated to percentage changes in SVV (r(2)=-0.59, p<0.001), ITBVI (r(2)=0.79, p<0.001), and PAOP (r(2)=0.33, p<0.05) and to baseline values of SVV (r(2)=0.55, p<0.05) and LVEDAI (r(2)=-0.68, p<0.001).
Conclusions: SVV may help to determine the preload condition of ventilated patients following cardiac surgery and to predict and continuously monitor effects of volume administered as part of their hemodynamic management.

The upstream mechanobiological pathways that regulate the downstream mineralization rates in periodontal tissues are limitedly understood. Herein, we spatially colocalized and correlated compression and tension strain profiles with the expressions of mechanosensory ion channels (MS-ion) TRPV4 and PIEZO1, biometal zinc, mitochondrial function marker (), cell senescence indicator (), and oxygen status marker hypoxia-inducible factor-1α () in rats fed hard and soft foods. The observed zinc and related cellular homeostasis in vivo were ascertained by TRPV4 and PIEZO1 agonists and antagonists on human periodontal ligament fibroblasts ex vivo.

Doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy (DOX-IC) is a significant and common complication in patients undergoing chemotherapy, leading to cardiac remodeling and reduced heart function. We hypothesized that the intrapericardial injection of hydrogels derived from the cardiac decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) loaded with adipose tissue-derived stromal cells (ASC) and their secretome dampens or reverses the progression of DOX-IC. DOX-IC was induced in Wistar male rats through ten weekly intra-peritoneal injections of doxorubicin (cumulative dose: 18 mg/kg).

Objective: The aim of this study is to detail and evaluate the surgical procedure for perilymph sampling from the cochlear apex in the Mongolian gerbil.
Design: Perilymph sampling from the cochlear apex was performed one to three time in 12 male gerbils aged 8 to 12 months via the submandibular route. 11 of them were previously implanted with intracochlear implants loaded with dexamethasone and placed in the scala tympani, the 12th was used to collect control samples.

Cell-to-cell heterogeneity in lipid signaling underlies variations in response and recurrence for many cancers, including leukemias. A highly parallel, miniaturized thin-layer chromatographic platform capable of assaying single cells was developed. Ultrasmall volumes (50 pL) of standard fluorescent lipids were separated with excellent repeatability, reproducibility, and limits of detection.

Repetitive mechanical stresses on the knee joint during daily activities accumulate fatigue damage in the articular cartilage (AC), leading to wear and knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Effective treatments remain limited, underscoring the need for predictive approaches to identify KOA early. This study proposes a mathematical model to estimate AC degradation under cyclic loading from walking.
