[Isolation of three species of Nocardia in a patient receiving long-term corticosteroid therapy].

Published: March 2002

Introduction: Nocardia are saprophyte bacteria of the environment responsible for systemic infections in immunodepressed patients, due essentially to long-term corticosteroids.

Observation: A patient having received corticosteroids for sarcoidoses for a year was hospitalised because of disseminated granulomatosis (neurological, respiratory, abdominal and cutaneous). Culture of various bacteriological samples isolated three species of Nocardia: N. otitidiscaviarum in uretheral pus and pus from the right gland, N. nova and N. asteroides in respiratory samples (protected distal sampling and broncho-alveolar washing).

Comments: Other than the mixed Nocardia infections described habitually, infections with two different species of Nocardia have recently been reported. Our case report is the first to have isolated three concomitant species of Nocardia.

The northern snakehead () is a valuable aquaculture species across certain Asian countries, contributing significantly to economic prosperity and dietary needs. However, its productivity faces significant challenges, particularly from diseases such as nocardiosis, caused by . To date, the majority of research efforts have focused on describing the observed phenomena related to infection.

Is Pseudofrankia, the non-nitrogen-fixing and/or non-nodulating actinorhizal nodule dweller, mutualistic or parasitic? Insights from genome-predictive analysis.

Int Microbiol

December 2024

Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, USCR Molecular Bacteriology and Genomics, National Institute of Applied Science and Technology, University of Carthage, 1080, Tunis Cedex, Tunisia.

This study re-evaluates Pseudofrankia strains, traditionally regarded as parasitic dwellers of actinorhizal root nodules due to their inability to fix nitrogen (Fix -) and/or nodulate (Nod -), as potential plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB). We compared plant growth-promoting traits (PGPTs) between Pseudofrankia strains, including one newly sequenced strain BMG5.37 in this study and typical (Fix + /Nod +) Frankia, Protofrankia, and Parafrankia, as well as non-frankia actinorhizal species Nocardia and Micromonospora, and the phytopathogenic Streptomyces.

Introduction: Microbial contamination in food products such as pastries, poses a significant public health concern due to the potential risks of foodborne infection and outbreak, Therefore, to prevent these infections, it is essential to investigate the frequency and extent of microbial contamination as well as the level of drug resistance in pastries. Due to this issue, our study aimed to assess the microbial diversity and the drug susceptibility patterns of microbial pollutants in pastry shops in Markazi province, Iran.

Methods: The study involved collecting 120 pastry samples from 30 pastry shops in Markazi province, Iran.

Background: Drug susceptibility testing (DST) for Nocardia spp. is essential to initiate effective antibiotic therapy. Currently, the only recommended technique is the determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) by microdilution.
