Microbes of nearly every species can form biofilms, communities of cells bound together by a self-produced matrix. It is not understood how variation at the cellular level impacts putatively beneficial, colony-level behaviors, such as cell-to-cell signaling. Here we investigate this problem with an agent-based computational model of metabolically driven electrochemical signaling in Bacillus subtilis biofilms.

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) may have significant diagnostic challenges due to their genetic complexity and diverse inheritance patterns. Advanced genotyping tools like exome sequencing (ES) offer promising opportunities for identifying causative variants and improving disease management. This retrospective study was aimed to present prevalent pathogenic and novel variants in patients diagnosed with IRDs using ES.

Background: Peroxisome biogenesis disorders (PBD) affect multiple organ systems. It is characterized by neurological dysfunction, hypotonia, ocular anomalies, craniofacial abnormalities, and absence of peroxisomes in fibroblasts. PBDs are associated with mutations in any of fourteen different genes, which are involved in peroxisome biogenesis.

Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is associated with high mortality, heavy economic burden, limited treatment options and poor prognosis, and seriously affects the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and life expectancy of patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis of HRQoL and health state utility value (HSUV) in IPF patients and the instruments used in this assessment aimed to provide information sources and data support for the future research on IPF HRQoL and HSUV.
Methods: We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases for studies reporting the HRQoL or HSUV of IPF patients, with the retrieval time from the establishment of each database to April 2024.

Cell trafficking is a tightly regulated biological process for the exchange of signals and metabolites between cell compartments, including four main processes: membrane trafficking (transport of membrane-bound vesicles), autophagy, transport along the cytoskeleton, and membrane contact sites. These processes are cross-sectional to cellular functions, ranging from the transportation of membrane proteins, membranes, and organelles to the elimination of damaged proteins and organelles. In consequence, cell trafficking is crucial for cell survival and homeostasis, serving as a cornerstone for cellular communication and facilitating interactions both with the surrounding environment and between different organelles.
