The required HLB values of eucalyptus, lippia and peppermint essential oils were determined using droplet size analysis and turbidimetric method on emulsions prepared with emulsifier blends of varying HLB values. The percentage increase in mean droplet diameter and the degree of dispersion of droplet sizes were determined before and after centrifugation of the emulsions. The HLB value of the emulsion with the least dispersion ratio or the least percentage increase in mean droplet diameter was taken as the required HLB of the respective essential oil. The turbidimetric method was validated by the existence of correlation (r=-0.958) between the mean droplet diameter and the turbidity of the emulsions. The turbidity curve went through a maximum at the HLB value where the mean droplet diameter was least. Based on these methods, the required HLB values of eucalyptus, lippia and peppermint oils were determined as 9.8, 12.1 and 12.3, respectively (P<0.05). Liquid paraffin was used as a reference standard and its required HLB fell within literature value.

Chlorinated coumarins, which are as cytotoxic as highly toxic halobenzoquinones toward CHO-K1 cells, have recently been identified as disinfection byproducts in drinking water disinfection processes. Therefore, detecting coumarins in water samples collected at various stages from drinking water treatment plants helps assess the formation of chlorinated coumarins in drinking water. Hence, a simple, rapid, accurate, and sensitive method for quantifying coumarins in water samples is required.

In this study, an automatic magnetic solid phase extraction method was developed to determine six parent neonicotinoids (NEOs) and three of their metabolites in breast milk, serum and urine samples. As key extraction parameters, the sorbent amount, washing solvent and elution solvent were optimized to 4 mg of HLB packing magnetic sorbent, pure water and acetonitrile, respectively. Recoveries of the analytes ranged between 81% and 121% for bovine milk samples, 64% and 122% for fetal bovine serum samples and 81% and 109% for pooled urine samples, with RSDs of <20%.

Citriculture is facing challenges due to the spread of various diseases, among which the most threatening, with worldwide occurrence, is Huanglongbing (HLB), caused by the bacteria Candidatus Liberibacter spp., vectored by psyllids. In orchards, HLB-infected plants are identified by visual observation of symptoms.

This work introduces a novel 1-pot, 0-waste, 0-VOC methodology for synthesizing polymeric surfactants using acrylated epoxidized soybean oil and acrylated glycerol as primary monomers. These macromolecular surfactants are synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, allowing for tunable hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) and ionic properties. We characterize the copolymers' chemical composition and surface-active properties, and evaluate their effectiveness in forming and stabilizing emulsions of semiepoxidized soybean oil and poly(acrylated epoxidized high oleic soybean oil).
