Gentisate and salicylate 1,2-dioxygenases (GDO and SDO) facilitate aerobic degradation of aromatic rings by inserting both atoms of dioxygen into their substrates, thereby participating in global carbon cycling. The role of acid-base catalysts in the reaction cycles of these enzymes is debatable. We present evidence of the participation of a proton shuffler during catalysis by GDO and SDO.

Hell's Gate globin-I (HGb-I) is a thermally stable globin from the aerobic methanotroph . Here we report that HGb-I interacts with lipids stoichiometrically to induce structural changes in the heme pocket, changing the heme iron distal ligation coordination from hexacoordinate to pentacoordinate. Such changes in heme geometry have only been previously reported for cytochrome c and cytoglobin, linked to apoptosis regulation and enhanced lipid peroxidation activity, respectively.

The ionizable-lipid component of RNA-containing nanoparticles controls the pH-dependent behavior necessary for an efficient delivery of the cargo-the so-called endosomal escape. However, it is still an empirical exercise to identify optimally performing lipids. Here, we study two well-known ionizable lipids, DLin-MC3-DMA and DLin-DMA using a combination of experiments, multiscale computer simulations, and electrostatic theory.

Bioleaching processes and acid mine drainage (AMD) generation are mainly driven by aerobic microbial iron(II) and inorganic sulfur/compound oxidation. Dissimilatory iron(III) reduction coupled to sulfur/compound oxidation (DIRSO) by acidophilic microorganisms has been described for anaerobic cultures, but iron reduction was observed under aerobic conditions as well. Aim of this study was to explore reaction rates and mechanisms of this process.

Halo-fluoresceins are widely used in cell and tissue staining, intracellular sensing, and photodynamic therapy, but their notorious photo-instability and pH dependence restrict their applications, especially in long-term visible light exposure and acidic environments. To overcome these limitations, here a strategy is proposed of conjugating chitosan with the carboxyl group of halo-fluorescein (CS-halofluorescein). The cross-linked polymer chains and the hydrogen-bonding networks of chitosan help shielding out O from direct attacking the encapsulated halo-fluoresceins, leading to a two orders of magnitude lower photobleaching rate.
