Studies have found Cannon-Spoor's Premorbid Adjustment Scale (PAS) to be a useful measure of premorbid function and an effective predictor of outcome in patients with chronic schizophrenia. Despite its widespread use, the applicability and reliability of the scale for use with young patients who experience their first episode of schizophrenia have not been thoroughly examined. We review the studies that used the PAS to assess premorbid function in patients with either chronic or first-episode schizophrenia. Difficulties that have been encountered with the use of the PAS in first-episode patients are presented, and modifications that have been made to the scale by various research groups are described. Finally, we make recommendations to enhance the use of the PAS when evaluating patients who have experienced their first episode of schizophrenia.

A high fat, high sugar diet exacerbates persistent post-surgical pain and modifies the brain-microbiota-gut axis in adolescent rats.

Persistent post-surgical pain (PPSP) occurs in a proportion of patients following surgical interventions. Research suggests that specific microbiome components are important for brain development and function, with recent studies demonstrating that chronic pain results in changes to the microbiome. Consumption of a high fat, high sugar (HFHS) diet can drastically alter composition of the microbiome and is a modifiable risk factor for many neuroinflammatory conditions.

Purpose: To determine the relationship between self-reported physical activity and the components of premorbid metabolic syndrome in patients treated in primary care according to sex.

Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study conducted on a sample of 2,359 patients without cardiovascular disease or diabetes, included in the cohort of the IBERICAN study. Using ANOVA models and adjusting for age, economic status, employment situation, level of education, adherence to a Mediterranean diet, tobacco use and alcohol consumption, we estimated the association of the variables blood pressure, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, blood glucose and waist circumference with the self-reported level of physical activity (sedentary, moderate, high, very high).

The e-STROKE study is a prospective, multicenter observational study designed to assess the impact of various CT parameters (including e-ASPECT, CT perfusion (CTP), collateral flow status, and the size and location of the ischemic lesion) on the clinical outcomes of patients with ischemic stroke, as evaluated by the modified Rankins Scale (mRS) three months post-stroke. This study also aims to investigate whether the use of multimodal CT imaging increases the number of patients eligible for recanalization therapy. The analysis will integrate data from the RES-Q registry and radiological data from the e-STROKE system provided by Brainomix Ltd.

Introduction: Stroke incidence in younger adults is increasing worldwide yet few comprehensive studies exist from a UK population. We investigated the risk factors, mechanisms, functional outcome and stroke recurrence rate in a cohort of young adults with stroke.

Patients And Methods: We included consecutive patients (<55 years) with ischaemic stroke or intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) admitted to the University College London Hospitals Hyperacute Stroke Unit between 2017 and 2020.
