Novel sequences propel familiar folds.

Structure

Published: April 2002

Recent structure determinations have made new additions to a set of strikingly different sequences that give rise to the same topology. Proteins with a beta propeller fold are characterized by extreme sequence diversity despite the similarity in their three-dimensional structures. Several fold predictions, based in part on sequence repeats thought to match modular beta sheets, have been proved correct.

Many new circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) and unique recombinant forms (URFs) of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) have been discovered in populations with multiple circulating HIV-1 genotypes. In this study, we report two novel URFs derived from two HIV-1-positive individuals in Hebei, China, who were infected through homosexual (BDD142) and heterosexual (BDD154) contact. Phylogenetic and recombinant analyses of the two NFLG revealed that they are second-generation recombinant strains originating from the CRF01_AE cluster 4/B and CRF01_AE cluster 5/B strains.

Identification of potential drug-target interactions (DTIs) is a crucial step in drug discovery and repurposing. Although deep learning effectively deciphers DTIs, most deep learning-based methods represent drug features from only a single perspective. Moreover, the fusion method of drug and protein features needs further refinement.

Melatonin, a molecule with diverse biological functions, is ubiquitously present in living organisms. There is significant interest in understanding melatonin signal transduction pathways in humans, particularly due to its critical role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle. However, a knowledge gap remains in fully elucidating the mechanisms by which melatonin influences circadian regulation.

The Developmental Origin of Novel Complex Morphological Traits in Lepidoptera.

Annu Rev Entomol

January 2025

Department of Biology and Molecular Sciences Research Center, University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Novel traits in the order Lepidoptera include prolegs in the abdomen of larvae, scales, and eyespot and band color patterns in the wings of adults. We review recent work that investigates the developmental origin and diversification of these four traits from a gene-regulatory network (GRN) perspective. While prolegs and eyespots appear to derive from distinct ancestral GRNs co-opted to novel body regions, scales derive from in situ modifications of a sensory bristle GRN.
